If you have a troubling back dnt risk going on 4wd rides no matter how carefull the driver there is no guarantee of a cushioned soft ride.

The road to Wadi Rum is OK

The roads in the desert are desert tracks and NOT roads. Even if the driver goes slowly and carefully (if you have hired a private guide) then you are going to get bounced and jostled.

The roads outside the desert are excellent and you need have no worries there.

As the others said there are no proper roads in the desert. There are only sand tracks and not very comfortable. However if you still want to visit Wadi Rum and spend the night, there is a Bedouin camp very close to the main road. It’s called Wadi Rum Camp. From there you can still enjoy the view of Wadi Rum without driving inside the desert.

The roads outside the Desert are generally quite good, but there are a lot of speed bumps (that are not always clearly marked) and should be driven over slowly and with care to avoid being bumped. Also on the way to Wadi Rum after you leave the main highway you have the railway to cross over which can bump/jar if taken at speed.

The roads outside Wadi Rum are excellent - the desert roads are just desert tracks so you will feel the bumps etc.etc..hopefully, you will have a good driver.
