Visas can usually be extended.

from the VOA article.....

Note: Extension of a visa is a simple process. You need to go to an agent because there are so many rules and the passport must go to HCMC or Hanoi. Generally speaking all extended visa are single entry, and can be 1 month or 3 month (1 month VOA usually cannot get the 3 month extension). Cost is from 20 to 40$ depending of the months and the distance from the immigration office, the passport can be sent only on the last week of validity and it usually takes from 3 to 10 days.

And if applying around Tet, costs and delays rise, as I found out a couple of years ago. And as mentioned above, the extension is single entry only. Something to bear in mind if you are looking to come into and leave Vietnam during the extension.

Should be no problem to extend your visa, you should be able to do it 3 times. For a 6 or 12 mth visa you have to go to Cambodia, PP or Sihanouk Ville.
