Accommodation recommendation.

I plan to visit Koh Tao in December for the first time. We love swimming and snorkelling. We're looking for cheaper accommodation that is lovely. ...any suggestions?

Best places for snorkeling in my opinion are Aow Leuk, Tanote Bay, regarding Tanote Bay have a look at Family Tanote, at Aow Leuk I stayed once at Aow Leuk 2 but is overpriced.

Keep in mind that Aow Leuk and Tanote Bay are lovely but pretty secluded, if you want more chances for drink and food Chalok Baan Kao is a good compromise, from there you can easily walk to Thian Og Bay, good snorkeling too. There are plenty of cheap accomodation in Chalok Baan Kao, some options: Big Fish, Tropicana, Taatoh Resort and Freedom Beach Resort, Taraporn Resort...

The weather in December can be unpredictable due to monsoon season on the Gulf coast, usually isn't rainy as november.

Hi there,

We agree with Matti, the weather in December can be variable as its the end of our monsoon period - November typically being the wettest month. The areas Matti suggested are lovely for snorkelling, albeit a bit secluded. However at that time of year you may find there is a fair amount of litter at east coat beaches and resorts. As an island Koh Tao has various wind patterns circulating around it all year round. In October/November when monsoon winds start, they come from the northeast, and over a period of several months strong winds and waves batter the shoreline of the east coast of the island, bringing with them all the ocean trash they've picked up on the way from all over the gulf. In Hopefully this will be over by the time you arrived, and the wind may have moved round to the south. But just be aware that in December you may still notice this a bit.

The more secluded resorts are likely to be cheaper than staying in Sairee, Mae Haad or Chalok. It really depends where you want to be in terms of amenities and activities though. There's no point saving a couple of hundred baht on accom per night if you're spending time and money on long walks or taxis/longtails etc to get to other places through the day and in the evenings. One thing I will say, based on the description of what you're looking for, is that in our experience 'cheap' and 'lovely' dont often fall in the same bracket that often!

If you give us a better idea of what you want to do through the day, whether you want to have access to the bigger villages for restaurants and bars etc, and an idea of budget, we'll be able to help much more in terms of specific locations or resorts.

Happy holiday planning :)

Thanks for the advice.....my idea of perfect accommodation would be on the beach....good, safe snorkeling ,rustic with character is fine...clean.....safe.........doesn't have to have power all the time.....good food nearby. ...

Price under $100US or cheaper.....

OK, thanks for that. Finding something for 100USD per night should be very easy - that's quite a generous budget for a rustic beach bungalow!

Based on what you're looking for I'd go with somewhere at the south of the island, which was one of Matti's original suggestions. There are nice rustic bungalows on Freedom Beach, and lots of options in Chalok (as per Matti's reply above). In Chalok you will also find plenty options for food and some bars for drinks in the evening.

Chalok is the sleepiest of the 3 villages on the island, so if you crave a bit more action you can always walk or take a taxi to Mae Haad or Sairee on the evenings. There are much fewer bungalows on the beach in these other villages though, so sticking to the south side of the island is probably your best bet. The wind will not have moved all the way to the south so the beaches should still be clean and safe for you too.

Hope that helps :)

For places to stay in/near chalok there's all the places Matti recommended in the first response. Freedom Beach Resort probably fits the bill well if you're looking for an authentic, rustic feel.

If you want to be somewhere secluded but closer to Mae Haad and Sairee as well as Chalok, you could look at Bamboo Huts resort which is on the south western coastline, or Sai Tong resort which is a little further south again.

Hope this helps :)

I like Freedom Beach Resort. Saw a Water Monitor Lizard walking on the path between the beaches many times. Beautiful scenery and good value for money.
