snorkelling

i spent time in Koh Tao 12 years ago and was thinking of coming back with my kids in December, to do some snorkelling and maybe i can sneak a dive in for old times sake. I dont really want to be in the party party scene ( we'll have a 3 year old in tow) would koh tao be suitable. we are looking for beach huts not resorts any ideas ? just want to spend most of our days head down in the water

Tanote Bay or Aow Leuk Bay can be a good choice for you. Some resorts with beach huts in secluded bay, beautiful beaches, good snorkeling by the shore, perfect for the kids.

In these areas there are no shops, only a couple of restaurants, if you want more facility I suggest you Chalok Baan Kao, Koh Tao Resort is the best value for money.

Hi

Agree with the above. As an alternative, another very popular family place is Sensi Paradise. The location is excellent for beach/water activities and quite secluded, but is within an easy walk to Mae Head where you have all the facilities you could need.

Do be aware though that the weather in December can be quite unpredictable due to it being monsoon season on the Gulf coast. November is normally the worst month, but world weather patterns are changing and monsoon season is technically October to January.

Safe and happy travels

We stayed at Ko Tao Resort and were not impressed. Toscana was a great place to stay with far better rooms and service in comparison to Ko Tao Resort, at a much more reasonable price. The only issue is that it is opposite a place called 'The Castle' which holds night time parties that are quite loud (this only happens one a week in peak season and once every two weeks in low season)- perhaps Montalay in Tanote or Tanote Villa Hill??

Chalok is your best option and that area is better for snorkelling (Tanote, Aow Leuk, Thian Og/Shark bay, Laem Thian but don't forget and the wreck on the far left side of Mae Haad.)

Stay away from Sairee as it is much busier and tends to draw in the backpackers and partiers.

Depending on when you come in December may determine where you stay. If it's at the beginning of the month, the island is still quiet, if you are coming from 15th onward, Koh Tao will be busier and it would definitely be worth considering hotels more out of the way.

If you would like the option of swimming off the beach you are staying on, bear in mind the prevailing wind in December comes from the North East, so bays facing that way will be wavy and not the best conditions for snorkelling, especially for children. Your best conditions should be in Sairee & Jansom bays around to as far as Chalok. Bays further round the island will be quieter for sleeping, but you would need to be prepared to travel to suitable beaches for swimming etc.

Hi again,

The weather is a little on and off at the moment, few nice days, few rainy days. Hopefully it'l be nice again by the time you arrive. We use wind guru to check conditions up to a week ahead - it is just a forecast and subject to change, but helpful as gives rain, swell, wind direction, cloud coverage etc, so you can plan all your activities:

Safe travels :)
