Bangkok - Ko Samui

I am flying from Sweden to Bangkok, and are planning on staying there for a couple of nights before we continue to Ko Samui in July. I was wondering what the best way is to go from Bangkok to Ko Samui? Obviously, you save time by flying, but how is boat for an option? If I understand it correctly, you can take Seatran Express, which is quite fast and cheap, compared to a flight-ticket.

Any advise?

Not from bangkok you can't (the boat that is). Cheaper to fly to Surat Thani and then take bus/ferry combo ticket. The trains are great. They are "sleepers' - I sleep very well on them and are cheap. They arrive at Phum Phin (the station for Surat Thani) and the buses are waiting to take you to the car ferry at Don Sak where the scenic boat ride is only an hour and a bit.
