What sort of budget are you lookiing to spend per night? As not really sure what sort of back packer not too basic but not too expensive is in actual monatary terms.

It is sort of easier to draw up a short list and seek comments from there.

http://www.sawadee.com/hotel/kohphangan/ is a great place to find out what fits in your budget, also look in the left hand panel of this page and check out the ‘Koh Phangan Hotels’ where you see the full range of hotels / apartment rental / B&Bs etc for that area, and you can also sort by budget [and your style] as well as read recent reviews

Haad Salad Beach would be a good choice to look at:

I think Haad Yao may suit you best. Haad Salad may be too quiet for you and caters a lot to families.

check www.phangan.info for hotel options.

Provided you are not there during a Full Moon Party week you can get some excellent deals right on Had Rin Beach.

Plenty or bars and restaurants to choose from and a great beach. For cheap accommodation, try the last bungalows to the LH end of the beach.

I will be at Phangan during FMP January. If Haad Rin properties are fully booked, which beach is the best for a solo traveller? Or, which beach offers more bars, restaurants or attractiond after Haad Rin?

Yes, it is only Had Rin.

You have left it impossibly late for JAN FMP!!

Haad Salad might be an ok option too, but quieter than Haad Rin, but as TM says you've left it very late. This website is often quite good for picking up late bookings:
