Can't decide: Khao Lak or Ko Lanta

Am going round and round and hope someone will shed light on which area to stay for 6 nights.

Flying from Chiang Mai on November 20, leaving from Bangkok on Nov. 27 and spending the 26th at the airport for a very early flight home.

Mid 60's, active. Wanting to try some paddleboarding, exploring beaches, may rent a vehicle. not really relax on the beach types. We would like some variety in eating out but are not big on nightlife.

We usually wear ourselves out in the day and fairly early to bed. From what we have read Phuket and Pattaya don't appeal (no offense).

Both Khao Lak and Ko Lanta sound great but with 6 nights have to choose just one. Would appreciate any feedback to help us make a choice. Our 5 week trip is set except for this last 6 nights. Thank you.

I'd say you'll find more to do around Khao Lak and you'll be able to visit more places from Khao Lak which isn't an island.

Both destinations are great. But if this is your only visit to Thailand, my recommendation would be Koh Lanta. Fly to Krabi and stop for a night or two in Ao Nang (half an hour from the airport), to see the fantastic limestone landscape at Railey and Phra nang beaches and the nearby islands. Then head to Koh Lanta by passenger ferry along the coast, or overland (a couple of hours). Or go the other way around and start at Koh Lanta, depending on what time of the day your flights are.

There you can try paddleboarding which seems to be a popular activity at Klong Dao, and a variety of many good local and western restaurants by the beaches and the beachroad along the west side of the island. Not to forget all the fish restaurants on stilts in Saladan town. It is easy to find a reasonable tuk-tuk or taxi if you prefer not to drive. There are several secluded beaches and nice viewpoints down at the hilly part of the island on the way to the park and lighthouse at the south tip. Lanta Old Town across the island is also a must. The beaches of Krabi province are not covered with sunbeds, btw. Restriction due to the National Park status.

If you find time to squeeze in some more sightseeing at Krabi mainland before or after Koh Lanta, you could check out the Tiger Cave with all the stairs, Emerald pool/Hot springs and Krabi town among others.

Plenty of information on Khao Lak on the forum at tripadvisor.co.uk/ShowForum-g297914-i10908-K… to help you make yor mind up. We found Khao Lak just after the Tsunami in 2004 and have returned there every year for increasingly longer periods since and now spend from November to April there avoiding our Winter. We too are in our mid 60s.

Thank you so much for your input. After agonizing over the decision, we decided on Ko Lanta. we are very keen on paddleboarding and think Ko Lanta offers the best opportunities. we booked Lanta Castaway which even though without a pool ticks all our boxes.

we will be flying into Krabi arriving around 1:30pm. Any thoughts on easiest and fastest way to get to Ko Lanta from there? It seems we will miss the passenger ferry.

again, thank you for your suggestions. always very helpful on this site.

We are also going to Koh Lanta rather than Khao Lak in January 2014.

At 70+ we are trying to reduce travelling time, and so we have opted for the Speedboat transfer, albeit only 15 mins by speedboat. 1800 Baht p.p one way.

Check out Lanta Pocket Guide.com Get to Koh Lanta from the Airport

An easy, fast and comfortable way to get to koh Lanta, is by car direct from the airport, 1.30 - 2 hours. Price 2-3000 baht for a private van/car including tickets for the 2 car ferries. There are public alternatives too, and from my knowledge, also taxi at the airport. We use to arrange a private car through our hotel, to pick us up.

15 min. speedboat transfer? Not sure from where that would be. You have to drive for a while from the airport to reach the speedboat anyway, so all i all I am not sure how much time you will save.

@LISANNE64

The speedboat option might be confusing, I believe you still go most of the way by road, the same road as the taxi. The speedboat goes from around the first car ferry pier to Saladan pier, then your back on the road again to your hotel. It`s not really much of a saving in time if any, the car ferry waiting times have improved and there is a bridge being built.

A taxi or minivan will take you all the way to your hotel without getting up out of your seat and hauling your luggage about. Mini van is 450 person or less.

If you don't mind shared minibuses then Lanta Castaway should be able to arrange for one of the minibuses which go to Koh Lanta to collect you from the airport. The minibuses don't routinely stop at the airport, but the resorts on Lanta can prebook them to stop at the airport to meet your flight.

Otherwise you could stop the the night in Krabi Town (good food market!) and then book a minibus from there for the next day.

Koh Lanta is lovely, Khao Lak is still on our to do list!

With 6 days, Khao Lak has more to offer you than Ko Lanta.

We did 3 trips to Lanta, and it was our favourite Thai destination, relaxing, great food, great beaches.

We then discovered Khao Lak and have now been there 3 times, without a thought of returning to Lanta.

KL is same same but different with a wider area to discover. Khao Lak is also close to Phuket Airport, transfers to Khao Lak from the airport are just over the hour, we are lucky to do that to Patong, Kata etc on Phuket. Lanta to the airport 4-5 hours by road.
