Amritsar is one amazing travel destination - it was the highlight of our 3 week trip around Northern India. The Golden Temple is much more than a gold building - the place has such a buzz of people, colour, and the most friendly people. We visited on New Years Day so the temple was very busy so it is was even more incredible to see the kitchen operating with the 500L pots and the chapatti maker pumping out 5000 per hour.
We went to India-Pakistan border cermony which was a interesting and unusual event with lots of noise and chanting, plus the guards marching in the style of the 'Ministry of Funny Walks' - aka Monty Python.
NYE was at the Hotel Ista which was good fun - lots of dancing, food and drinks in an outdoor courtyard.
Food wise - the best restaurant was Crystal just down the road from our hotel Country Inn and Suite (which itself was ok). Just remember to go to the place on the ground floor place, as the one on the 1st and 2nd floor is a poor copy. The Lamb Rojan Josh and Chicken Tikka was the best that we tasted on the whole trip.
Finally, we had a great guide who took us around the sites - he was young and keen, but importantly didnt push us into tourist stores to buy over-priced stuff. Vinay can be contacted at email@example.com
