A few hours on Roatan

Hello,

Will be spending a day on Roatan as part of a cruise. We're a group in our 30's, who are thinking of spending the day in West End. Should we arrange for transport in advance, or is it easy enough to catch a taxi on the day? Have read that the charge should be $15 pp for a return trip. Does this mean the cab waits for you, or do you arrange a specific pick-up time for the return? Is it OK to ask to go to West End, or should we be more specific and request to be taken to Half Moon Bay, or do you have any suggestions? Are there plenty of loungers and shade? Is it easy to rent snorkel equipment and snorkel from the beach?

Thanks for your help:-)

Considering you ask about loungers and shade, Perhapse you should consider West Bay instead as it is the larger beach with a few places accomodating cruisers.

Don't know about the cab before or after, what dock are you scheduled to come in on, Coxen Hole or Mahogany Bay?

Thanks Bluehouseguy! The ship docks in Coxen Hole. Not that keen on hanging out with all of the cruisers. Are there any shady parts on the beach in West End?

Thanks again.

You can get some shade at half mood bay in West End. There are trees between the beach and the road so if you are toward the back of beach there are trees that provide some shade. I have seen some loungers toward the east end of half moon bay near sundowners, but I am not sure who they belong to or if you can rent them.

As far as getting there, we met someone from the cruise ship in west bay. They paid $25 per adult (4) for an adult and $20 for the teenagers(2). So they paid $140 RT to west bay for 6 (the cab came back at a specific time to pick them up...they paid when they returned to the boat). I am not sure if that is normal or not. West End should be cheaper because it is not as far. It used to be you could get a cheaper taxi rate if you walked into town vs getting the cab at the dock, but I don't know if that still holds true.

One note...if you agree on a time to be picked up, make sure you are clear. You will stay on "ship time" while the taxi may be working on the local time. For example, right now boats out of Miami are 2 hrs ahead of local time. You think your ship is pulling into Roatan at 8am, but it is really 6am here....if you have to be back on the boat at 4pm, that is 2pm in Roatan. Any confusion and you could miss your ship.

That is a good point about being on ship time vs Roatan time. I was an hour late picking up friends for the day from one of the ships. Very confusing and we lost an hour of tour time. I need to add that to this story about cruising to Roatan roatanvortex.com/2010/…

If you want to hang out in West End (definitely less crowded) the beach at Half Moon Bay is a good choice. There is a fun place called Sundowners worth checking out. roatanvortex.com/2010/… A fav spot with expats!

Taxis for cruisers are pretty steep prices. If you arrive at the Coxen Hole port it will be cheaper than the Mahogany Bay port, and you can walk into Coxen Hole to hail a taxi. That combined with only going as far as West End will definitely save you some money.
