Is it worth to visit Otavalo market during a week day?

Hi there,

Unfortunately we are not able to make it to Otavalo on a weekend. Therefore my question is: is it worth to visit the Otavalo market on a week day?

Many thanks

I always enjoyed the market no matter the day. The big Saturday market is a real experience, plus quite crowded especially after the tour buses arrive. The other days of the week the market is much smaller, fewer tourists, and pretty much limited to the plaza. However, you have more negotiating room, plus you can still visit the vendors selling six different kinds of corn, or various types of potatoes, all of which are used for specific purposes (of course it helps if you can understand Spanish to learn about their uses). After the market, a visit to Catacochi is fun; you can get good quality leather goods for attractive prices, and visit the small church. If you like fine weaving you can visit the workshops in Peguche.

If your sole reason for visiting is to shop for souvenirs, you might as well stay in Quito and shop at the artisan's market there. Go to Otavalo for the cultural experience and the change of scenery.
