Zhongdian,Lugu lake and Tibetan Autonomous prefecture..

I am planning a trip to Zhongdian and Lugu lake and want to go as far as possible without actually needing a permit to enter Tibet. My tentative plan is as follows:

Fly into Lijiang-Zhongdian-Lugu lake-Yading nature reserve-Xiangcheng-Litang-Ganzi-Manigango-Dege and then back south to Tagong-Kanding and finally Chengdu.

Questions:

1.Are there public transportation between those places?I cant find info on Zhongdian-Lugu lake and from Yading to Xiangcheng.

2.How do I travel from Dege to Tagong or Kanding?Ideally I would like to fly some sections as I only have 2 weeks!!

3.Are any of those areas currently closed to foreigners?

thanks a lot!!

1. Re: Zhongdian,Lugu lake and Tibetan Autonomous prefecture..

it would be better if you travel as the following order: Lijiang-Lugu Lake-Lijiang-Zhongdian-Xiangcheng-Daocheng-Yading-Daocheng-Litang-Ganzi--Dege-

Tagong-Kangding-Chengdu

if you prefer to experience the trekking route of a world famous adventurer you may travel from Gulu Lake to Yading Nature Reserve, but preferably to join an organised tour.

1.you can find public transportation between those places. All of them leave early in the morning. Catch bus from Zhongdian to Lugu Laka via Lijiang, Yading to Daocheng, then hop on a bus to Zhongdian, and drop off in Xiangcheng. But this route is not recommended.

2.Buy a Map of Sichuan, try to catch bus from one county to another. This enables you travel from Dege to Tagong or Kangding. There is an airport in Kangding with scheduled flight to Chengdu and Chongqing. The Daocheng Airport is going to be put into use in this May.It is located about 4411meters above the sea level, considered to be the highest airport in the world.

3.It is now open to the foreigners, but it is hard to predict when it is closed again because of tension in this region.

2. Re: Zhongdian,Lugu lake and Tibetan Autonomous prefecture..

Herewith further info:

1) There is no bus route on Lugu Lake- Yading. You may;

A) Hire a 4WD or

B) Trek for 8-days, for details, please see www.lonelyplanet.com/thorntree/thread.jspa… post#3.

2) Bus schedule in 2012.11;

A) Zhongdian-Lugu lake

There is no direct bus route, please see www.lonelyplanet.com/thorntree/thread.jspa… post#1.

B) Zhongdian- Xiangcheng: 07:30

C) Zhongdian- Daocheng: 07:00

D) Daocheng- Zhongdian: 06:00

E) Daocheng- Kangding, Ya An & Chengdu: 06:00 (all via Litang)

F) Kangding- Dege: 06:00 (via Ganzi county, Manigango)

3) Yading to Xiangcheng:

You should Yading- Daocheng- Xiangcheng.

In high season, there is a lot of minivan on Yading- Daocheng at 17:00.

In low season, may be none. (not sure)

4) Noted that, the Western Sichuan is an sensitive area, especially in March, thus it is no guarantee.

Thanks!!

Can I travel from Lijiang to Daju-Baoshan then to Lugu lake?

Lugu lake-Daocheng-Xiangcheng-Zhongdian,then Zhongdian-Litang-Kangding-Chengdu?

Is Zhongdian worth all the detour?

Where is it best to stay in Lugu lake?

Is there bus between Lugu and Doacheng?I do not want to go back to Lijiang if possible.

Xiexie!!

You can travel from Lijiang to Baoshan Stone Village, then Lugu Lake by bus.

It is hard to travel from Lugu Lake to Daocheng, except you want to have a challenging trek.

Zhongdian has the biggest monastery of the Dge-Lugs Sect of Tibetan Buddhism in the Khampa Tibetan Area, and is the central city in that area.So it is worth a visit.

You can catch bus from Lugu Lake to Daju, and take ferry across the Jinsha River. Then catch bus to Qiaotou for connecting transfer to Zhongdian. If it is possible catch one bus directly to Zhongdian through another direction.

It is interesting to trek from Lugu Lake to Yading Natural Reserve. If you want to do that (called Follow Joseph Lock's Footprint),you may join an organised tour offered by some outdoor clubs.

Q1: Can I travel from Lijiang to Daju- Baoshan then to Lugu Lake?

A1: There was bus on Lijiang- Daju (by bus) but no further info on Daju- Baoshan- Lugu Lake.

Q2: Lugu lake- Daocheng- Xiangcheng- Zhongdian, then Zhongdian- Litang- Kangding- Chengdu?

A2: First of all, until 2012.10, there is no public transportation tool on Lugu Lake- Daochen.

Secondly, please use google map, these places like a ‘Y-shaped’. Daochang locates at the bottom, Xiangcheng and Litang on the different direction.

You shall Lugu Lake- Lijiang- Zhongdian- Xiangcheng- Daocheng- Yading- Daocheng- Litang- Kangding- Chengdu. Or vice versa as Chengdu- Kangding- Litang- Daocheng- Yading- Daocheng- Xiangcheng- Zhongdian- Lijiang- Lugu Lake- Xichang- Chengdu/Kunming/flew from Xichang.

Q3: Is Zhongdian worth all the detour?

A3: If it is your first time to visit, it worth to stay 3~4 days.

Q4: Where is it best to stay in Lugu Lake?

A4: I visited Lugu twice and stay at Legi.

Q5: Is there bus between Lugu and Doacheng?I do not want to go back to Lijiang if possible.

A5: Until 2012.10, there is no public transportation tool on Lugu lake- Daochen.
