No messages on the forum, but definitely worth visiting this town. It's 2 1/2 hours by bus (30 Rmb) from Jiuzhaigou - a very scenic ride.
The place is quite popular with backpackers, so you will find several places where English is spoken. We stayed in Shun Jiang Guesthouse - simple rooms with bathroom for 120 Rmb. Lots of hot water - 24 hours a day. Nearby is Emma's Kitchen which serves good pizza, breakfasts and coffee. Chinese food not so good though! Instead, try somewhere such as Lanzhou Lamian, a Muslim place where a big bowl of noodles costs 10Y while an enormous plate of lamb costs 35Y. There is also a delicious bakery just before the covered bridge on the main street. Great ginger cake!
Besides the covered bridges, there are also high city walls you can walk around; Near the North gate you need to pay 60RMb admission to go up the walls, but near the South Gate there are steps up with no admission fee. There are also some nice tea houses in old buildings - a tea is around 5 Y and they have snacks like boiled new potatoes for 10 Y.
We did a day trip to Huanglong form Songpan. We hired a car for 200 Y return including waiting time, booked through the guesthouse. It takes around 90-120 minutes to get there from Songpan, and you go over a high pass with some great views. We left early, 7am, and got there before most of the crowds arrived. Coming back there is more traffic so the journey takes longer.
Shun Jiang Guesthouse is an ok place to stay. Friendly owners, and fairly comfortable. While bedding was clean, and there are electric blankets, the rooms and bathrooms could do with a good clean. No internet connection - there is one computer in Emma's kitchen and some internet cafes, but generally this is not a place for someone who needs to be online 24/7.
Finally, many people go on horse treks from Songpan. We didn't - due to reasons of time and a little tired after lots of hiking in the previous week. Reviews I have read and heard have generally been positive, but do your research. Also, be careful with the sun. It can be very bright and strong, so cover up and wear protection.
