You do not need visas to do this but sure, there is no issue as long as you do this in daytime while the Maglev is running.you'll need some RMB to pay for the tickets.
You will need to exit the train at Longyang Rd and board it again. You can not just stay on the train for a r/t. See schedule here: http://www.smtdc.com/en/jszl1_2.asp and also note that the max. speed differs during the day due to "environmental considerations" (where China is, as we all know, a role model for the world...)
Thank you very much for your replies. We will enter China from Hong Kong so we will have a multi-entry visa plus RMB's.
My concern is anything that might cause a time constraint like going through customs when exiting, going through security when entering Pudong Airport, or long walk from terminal to Maglev station. Because we are just transiting through Pudong I expect our luggage to be still in the hands of China Eastern Airlines and that we will have only our carry-ons.
My estimate of total time from exiting the airport termnal, taking the r/t on Maglev, and re-entering the terminal to be around 1 to 1.5 hours. Is this unreasonable?
One hour max.
You will go through immigration and customs entering China and then the same two plus security going back into the terminal. Both together should not take more than 60 minutes.
