where to stay

early 50's couple, visiting for weekend, shop during the day, happy hour and bars with music one night, great dinner the next night. Any suggestions on hotel, area, etc., with least amount of driving or easy cab access? thanks much

1. Re: where to stay

For the bars, music and dinner, Five Points South would be the best area. So, options for hotels include any in Southside or part of Homewood: Hotel Highlands, aloft, Doubletree, Marriott Residence Inn UAB, Courtyard UAB, Hyatt Place UAB, Springhill Suites UAB or Embassy Suites Homewood. You would be a short taxi ride to and from restaurants and bars at any of these. You are also still close to great shopping at the Summit or Brookwood and not too far to the Galleria. Let us know if you need help with places to go for music, food and fun.

Ona's Music Room for Jazz - at Pepper Place

Bottletree - not too far from Avondale Brew Pub

Marty's is a fun dive; shows early and late ...cash only - 5 pts south near Southside Baptist

Oasis...maybe too young depending on who's playing - in Lakeview

Also check The Garages - great bar and often with music -short walk from Bottega

Check out a brew pub: Avondale or Good People

Black and White lists venues and who's playing:

bwcitypaper.com/1editorialtablebody.lasso…

Great Dinner: Highlands, Bottega, Little Savannah, Ocean,

Shopping - aside from Malls: Homewood, Mountain Brook Village, Crestline Village, maybe the funky consignment shop in Forest Park on Clairmont across from Little Savannah, There are some weird shops on Southside - metal working, antiques, etc. You'll need to research and drive around. Pepper Place.

I am looking for find a cabin or similar near Birmingham for June. 5 girls are getting together to shop and hang out. Oak Mountain cabins are already booked. Are there other cabins in the area or any idea on where 5 can stay together or a long weekend? Thanks

I dont know of any other cabins, but a group of six of us recently stayed at the Embassy Suites in Hoover. It was very nice. The bedroom had two queen beds, and the separate living room had a double sofa bed. A big, free breakfast is included as is a nightly happy hour....two hours of free snacks/beer/wine/cocktails. Split the $130 per night fee...you can't find a better deal! Also very close to the Galleria/Patton Creek shopping area....about 10 minutes from the Summit.

You can always check www.vrbo.com and see if there is anything in the area that you would like. Maybe a short drive from B'ham on one of the many lakes.
