Itinerary advice for family with kids

We are planning 4 nights (so 3 actual touring days) in Guilin/Yangshou in March with our kids ages 9 and 10 at the time of the trip. Looking for itinerary help from someone with experience traveling or working with families with kids this age.

One of our biggest dilemmas is whether to take the cruise from Guilin to Yangshou or just drive straight to Yangshou. I’d hate to miss the scenery one gets with the Cruise, but also worry that 5 hours getting that 4-5 hours of scenic cruising could be a bit long for the kids. Also, the cruise would mean an additional hotel night in Guilin with unpacking/packing. Anyone with thoughts on this?

Also looking for itinerary advice once in Yangshou. We’re more interested in authentic experiences and local culture, and outdoor activities.

Will likely stay at the Yangshou Mountain Retreat.

We took the cruise from Guilin to Yangshuo 2 years ago with our then recently turned 11 daughter. She was not bored in the least. We really enjoyed it and the time went by fast enough. There's lots of different shaped mountains and the boat guide will mention things to look for (like finding the horses in one cliff).

We stayed at the Yangshuo Mountain Retreat. It's right along the river so you can easily catch the bamboo rafts. You can also rent bikes from the inn and bike along the river. The restaurant had a good mix of Chinese and western food -your kids might be ready for spaghetti or a cheese burger. We found there were a lot of westerners staying there when we were there.

Our daughter loved the Silver Caves - definitely visit at least one of the caves in the area. We also visited someone who makes fans and we made fans ourselves. That was a lot of fun. Also plan to spend time in Yangshuo. Are you going to the Rice Terraces when you are in Guilin? That was also a really good day.

Hi So happy to sharing some my idea with you.

With Childrens visitting here. Yes, Mountain Retreat also is a good idea. it is very beautiful view alont Yulong river.

So you have quiet short time visitting here.

Maybe you can think about the plan as below:

Day 1:

Arrive at the airport, then drive directly to Yangshuo's hotel.check in.

If you arrive early ,you can do relax biking and Rafting on Yulong river.

At night, drive to see the impression light show.

Day 2:

After breakfast, drive to visit Fuli town,if it is market day, you also can see some interesting local culture from the farmer's market at Fuli town. and you can learn how do painting on the paper fan. after drive to visit local countryside and some Tea farm and some Scenic view area. If you would like to see the Sunset, also can see beautifl Sunset on the way back.

At night, drive to visit West street. after drive back hotel.

Day 3:

After breakfast, you can do the Li river Cruise from Yangshuo to Yangdi, it is about 4 hous.

Day 4:

Drive to the airport.

If your fly in the late afternoon, you can think about visit Longji riice terraces first, then to the airport.

Maybe you can think about the itinerary above,

Thanks for the suggestions. We will be visiting in March--would the rice terraves still be worth visiting that time of year?
