January and February are high season, so yes. If you are thinking of taking Catamaranes del Sur, check the days it goes as I think it is only 2x a week.

Since you will be starting from Chaiten, consider booking through a travel agent there. I asked around and someone recommended B&V but they don't do email. There are others here:
You could wait until Chaiten but that might be risky. If you are staying in Chaiten you might contact the place where you are staying and see if they can book something for you. This would be my first choice.
I can't think of anything else other than visit a travel forum more geared to backpacking (bootsnall, lonely planet) and ask.
As far as I can find out, the only company supposedly serving Chaitén-Castro is Catamarenes del Sur. There does seem to be a ferry, but it probably cannot be booked ahead and it does not run everyday and if there is rough weather, fairly common it will not run either. You will just have to take a chance unles someone turns up with recent local knowledge.
