Is it too cold to surf in May?

I'm planning a trip in May 2010. I would like to learn surfing and I'll have my scuba license by then. Is it too cold for these activities in May?

There are plenty of other warmer places along Brazil's loooooong coastline to learn to surf in May.

For example, in my neck of the woods:

Salvador is also known for wreck diving. This school/shop is probably the most easily found:

Wetsuit.... and the great thing about wetsuits is that from a shark's perspective it makes the average human look even more like a tasty fur seal. ;-)

May is known in FLoripa as our 'summer out of time" or "late summer". We call it in portuguese: VERANICO DE MAIO (May´s little summer), which means sunny days, no wind, no crowd...in other words, april and may are my favorite time of the year in the island! the water is ok in may, sometimes just a lycra t-shirt will do it, or a short wetsuit. it´s a good time for surfing, but i´m not sure for scuba, mainly because i´ve heard that the water is more clear in january and february.
