Safety in Sta Teresa

Hi

I've heard clashing opinions on safety in Santa Teresa. Apart from taking the suggested precautions (dress down, no cameras, carrying limited cash etc.) could anyone tell me if it would be safer to walk around this neighbourhood on a weekday or on a Saturday when, if I'm correctly informed, certain streets are closed to traffic.

Thanks for reading!

1. Re: Safety in Sta Teresa

I'm not aware of traffic being closed on weekends.

I've walked around there a few times, during the day, alone and with my family and we had a pleasant time. There are several shantytowns around St. Teresa, but this does not always means more crime. The area is full of people and a lot of police, although some areas are more crowded than others.

I don't think you should have any problem and walking around St. Teresa is probably the best way to visit it. It really is one of the more interesting and non-touristed parts of Rio.

There isn't such a thing as an unsafe neighborhood in Rio.

Beware please: I'm being sarcastic here!

Thanks DJ. I can't for the life of me remember where I got this Saturday-no-traffic thing in my head, I've googled life right and center and found nothing!!! If I ever do I'll page you and post a link !!

Paulista, hi, happy new year. Your posts make it very clear that Rio is far from the safest city in the world and that it has many serious social issues that need to be addressed. Point taken and Rio bashing aside, I'm really excited, saved up, done my research (some of which is a bit wonky), talked to people, forumed others..... I'm definitely not cancelling my trip in March, so if you decide to share some useful info and insider tips I'm all ears .
