How safe is Tavares Bastos in Rio exactly?

I will be flying to Sao Paulo shortly for the World Cup semi final. After the game, I will then fly to Rio for a couple of day. This is my 1st time in Brazil, and I really want to visit one of those favelas. But I don't want to join those favela tours, as I think they are too "organized", if you see what I mean. Then I heard about this place called Tavares Bastos, which people commented that it's very safe as there was used to be a special police force headquarter, which then moved out in 2010. I'm wondering how safe exactly it is in Tavares Bastos? Say, if I walk around by myself taking photos using my DSLR, will I go into any trouble? Of course, I won't wear any gold chain on my neck for sure. I just want to know if it is "absolutely" safe, or merely "relatively" safe there that it is still not advised for me to walk around by myself? By the way, I'm a Chinese from Hong Kong, and I don't speak any Portuguese. Advice would be highly appreciated. Many thanks.

Although Tavares Bastos is sometimes referred to as the safest favela in Rio, it is still not a good idea to walk around there on your own, especially with an expensive DSLR camera. Not recommended.

Regardless of where you are, you should be always discreet about your electronics, your wallet, etc. Never walk with your camera around your neck, don't flash your items on the street all the time, etc. Be aware of your surroundings. Most of those crimes are performed by teenagers, who are poor and robb people on the street. Crime usually isn't a big issue inside the favela (but you should be discreet, anyway), because it is sort of guarded by those who live here and if someone practices a crime, this person is informally excluded from the community. But on the street, be careful not to flash your items.

It's highly advisable for you to learn some basic Portuguese phrases. English is usually spoken by the upper classes in Brazil, so I don't think you'll find other English speakers in a favela, except other tourists and maybe someone from a community center or whatsoever. Still, Brazilians are kind and will be happy to help. Have a phrase book on your hand, or a dictionary, which can help you in some situations.

Do not write "Tourista" on your forehead and hang a R$100 around your neck. Favela tours may be "organized", but the people who run them know where it's safe and where it's not safe, and how to keep out of trouble.

That's the kind of thing that can even get you in deep trouble or if not killed, you can't just walk in favela even if the safest in Rio and take pictures, the favela tours are safe because they are done by local that usually already have permission from the owners.

I3ERNALT is correct. Depending on the community, taking pictures is not something allowed.
