Calling all Rio foodies...!

I'm having trouble honing in on which restaurants I should visit while in Rio using the usual vehicles i.e. Yelp, TripAdvisor, Google searches. Looking for locals and/or food obsessed visitors to suggest their favorite spots.

My criteria:

a) non-touristy; I don't care how great the view is if the food is just ok

b) all price ranges from dirt cheap to high end

c) any neighborhood that's accessible by public transportation or a cheap taxi ride

d) places to eat traditional Brazilian food i.e. acai, moqueca de camarão, bolinho de chuva

Thanks very much for your help in advance!

I must have an iron stomach because I enjoyed a lot of beach treats haha. Queijo (fried cheese on a stick - oh yes!), camarao (shrimp) and kibbe from the men dressed in arab garb. All super tasty.

Sucos make the most delicious juice mixes - let them suggest some creative blends for you. Also try the salgados (savoury pastries) for a quick lunch on the go.

Another fave was the frozen pudding-like acai smoothie (served in a cup with a spoon). Very addictive ;).

I'm also a fan of Rio acai, which I prefer to the acai of other cities in Brazil, even if it's the special province of places like Belem. A tigela of acai in Rio makes a wonderful morning breakfast pick-me-up at any good sucos bar and you can often add other health-food extras if you like. Some Botafogo places on the main road facing the sea for instance offer a "Super Mega Bomba" one with ginseng etc.

On Friday, June 27th, between 8 and 11 p.m., Cheryl Jones, chef to Tom Hanks, Bill Clinton and Johnny Depp, is recreating a selection of her clients’ favorite foods for guests at the Special Dinner and Show at the Jubilee Hall in Botafogo.

This special event is co-hosted by the American Society of Rio de Janeiro (AmSoc Rio) and the British and Commonwealth Society of Rio de Janeiro (BCS) in the name of a good cause by raising money and awareness of the Art and Social Transformation—Creating Art Together (CAT) Rio 2014.

The CAT project brings world-class teachers from universities such as Harvard, Brown and Berklee College of Music to Rio de Janeiro to teach an intensive course for more than one hundred students in favela communities around Rio.
