Parque da Catacumba & Parque Lage Questions

I will be in Rio next week and plan to take a day with my wife and four year old son to "do" the Lagoon and area. A couple questions...

What time of day is it best to visit these two parks? Early, midday, afternoon?

Should I be concerned about my safety at these parks?

Will there be a lot of people if I go midweek? I'm thinking more people is good for safety so looking for a busier day and time to go.

Finally, what would be everyone's opinions on trying to do the Botanical Gardens, Parque da Catacumba, and Parqe Lage along with the rest of the Lagoon area all in one day? Can that be easily done in a half day? day? or would it be better to split over two days? Or are neither park worth making an effort to see? In my research, they seemed like good options for fun with my four year old.

Thanks.

Better going early. If you're looking for busier days, go on a weekend day.

Reserve a day to Botanical Gardens, Parque da Catacumba, Parqe Lage and Lagoa. Should be a great day.

Catacumba and Lage are safe locations. Seeing two of the three is more realistic. My preference would be to go to the Jardim Botanico and Catacumba. lage is nice but it was a bit run down the alst time we visited about 3 years ago. the bonus of catacumba will be the views from the top.

You will need to taxi from each location to the other.

Lagoa is the neighborhood around the lagoon Rodrigo de Freitas. It is one of Rio's nicer areas for walking or biking. Your four-year-old will no doubt enjoy watching the egrets on the lagoon. Be sure to hire one of the swan-shaped paddleboats.

For an educational afternoon, visit Rio’s Botanical Garden (Jardim Botânico), a nature park containing more than 6,000 different species of tropical and subtropical plants and trees and 140 species of birds.

Thanks so much for the feedback. This is so helpful. I'm planning on giving myself a day to do all three plus the lagoon itself, but I will now rank Parque Lage as last to see if I run out of time or get worn out.

Good feedback on the taxi's too. I wasn't sure if walking it, or trying to bike it, or tax was the best way to go. I'm hoping it's easy to catch a taxi from any of these locations around Lagoa.

Now I just need to the weather to cooperate. It looks like a lot of rain is predicted while I'm in Rio.

Thanks,

If you are staying in Ipanema, you can walk up to the Lagoa , bear right, and walk up to Parque da Catacumba in the early monring and do that hike. . You may have time to rent a paddle boat, they should be available in the area near catacumba.

Then walk back down towards Ipanema the way you came, and have lunch at Bar Lagoa - a classic place with great German food with Brazilian flare,.

Step out on to the Epatacio de Pessoa, the main boulevard, walk to your left a bit and catch a taxi going in that direction for the most direct route to the Jardim Botanico. Spend the afternoon there before catching a taxi or bus back to Ipanema. The bus is easy to ride and pretty fast on the way back, it goes thru Leblon and then down Visconde de Piraja, which is one of the the main streets in Ipanema.

Skip Parque Lage that day, as it's too much to do, especially with a young child.

Thanks for the feedback. I'm staying in Leblon so walking to Catacumba seems like an option. I'm not a huge fan of German food but I'll check into Bar Lagoa. I was thinking of grabbing lunch at "Lagoon" which sounds like a new place with several eating options and good views.

Thanks.
