Going to Rio in Aug! So many questions, anything will HELP!

I have a lot of questions so I going to break into categories. Basically Im going to Rio on August 16th till the 25th with my family and another family. All adults howevere 2 of those adults (including myself) are 23 years old, so we are interested in the nightlife as well.

WEATHER: Ive checked here and there and most places say its not cold but cool, more at night. Im going to assume a light jacket will do right? I dont want to underestimate the weather and when I go out at night Ill be freezing.

PLACES TO STAY: I am looking on homeaway.com for apartments we can rent so we can all stay together. Most of the apartments I look at, although all modern both inside and outside and near the beach, I am not sure if the neighborhood is safe just because its near a beach, therefore near crowds and tourists. The homeaway.com and other websites do not specify the location. Ive heard about the safety and to be careful when we go out but I dont want to stay and sleep in a location that may not to be safe. I also have been looking at hotels, just incase we cannot find an apartment we feel is safe enough to stay at. any suggestions?

SAFETY: like i said, safety is a major issue.

sorry I got cut off, gonna make this short and sweet.

SAFETY: areas to stay away from.

ADVENTURE: white water rafting, zip lining paragliding, paragliding. anything fun and crazy to do! mostly interested in zip lining and paragliding, anything scary to try out!

WATERFALLS: very important! I am more than obsessed with waterfalls. I know rio has them but I just wanted to see which forests have the most or most worth seeing. Since our time is short, we can visit most forests or national parks. Any waterfalls you can swim in, jump in or stand under would be preferable.

PLACES NEARBY: we are going to rent a car. any suggestions if there are any close cities or sites to see within 6 hour ish drive from Rio.

BEACHES: i know its winter in august for Brazil, and again since our time is short, any specific beaches that are worth seeing over the other ones. clearest waters or prettiest location anything.

OTHER: Ive searched things to do in rio and of course many of the common tourist locations show up, but are there any other areas you would recommend that are maybe less known to the public and worth checking out.

NIGHTLIFE: Im sure the adults arent going to be too interested in the clubs but which clubs do you think are the safest (VERY VERY IMPORTANT) and the most fun for 2 young people to enjoy, not a place filled with perverted old men, and more young and fun party people!

i know its long but I appreciate any little help I can receive to make my trip delightful!

Won't attempt to answer all that but on a few points, best areas to stay are near the beaches of Leblon, ipanema, Copacabana, & Leme, all reasonably safe, although Copa can be a bit funkier.

Jacket should be sufficient in Rio, but places to visit include Petropolis, Teresopolis, & Nova Friburgo in the mountains which will be cold at night, take a sweater, otherwise the beach resorts of Buzios & Cabo Frio to the East or Angra & Ilha Grande to the south are worth considering.

Hang gliding is very popular in Rio, just google it.

Rio has its share of trendy discos but they're nothing different to what you have at home, on the other hand one of the most attractive things about Rio (& Brazil in general) is the love of live Brazilian music performed by great musicians in non-ageist clubs where everyone is welcome (including both old & perverted and young & patronising!):

WEATHER: Yes. It'll be around 15 - 20ºC in the night, so in my opinion a jacket works. We're very informal in Rio, so you don't need to bring lots of different pieces of clothes.

PLACES TO STAY: What I really recommend is that you stick to apartments with good reviews and, if possible, offered by reliable agencies, in order to avoid any possible scams. RioAparments.com and RioExclusive.com are two reliable agencies I suggest, but you can also find deals on Airbnb, but as I said check the reviews. I recommend you look for apartments in Ipanema, Leblon and Copacabana (in that order). If you feel you need a feedback, feel free to post the address here and ask for a feedback (or send me a private message).

SAFETY: Some basic important information:

Don't flash your stuff around (ipods, ipads, iphones, etc). You can take your iphone around, but use common sense. I don't think Rio is as dangerous as it looks, but be discreet. E.g. if you go to the beach, don't leave your stuff back...make sure your bag will be with someone you know;

Try to blend in. No need to overdress;

Leave your passport at home. If you go to a club, you'll have to show an ID, but your American ID will work (just make sure it has a picture and your date of birth);

Credit cards and debit cards are widely accepted at restaurants, só you don't need to bring all your cash with you.

ADVENTURE: If you can, take a trip to Ilha Grande. It's not só far from Rio and it's quite a natural spot: tripadvisor.com/Attraction_Review-g303506-d5… This is a link of a tour guide who does day trips to the island. As it's quite an isolated place (isolated, but close), taking a tour might be a good option.

WATERFALLS: very important! I am more than obsessed with waterfalls. I know rio has them but I just wanted to see which forests have the most or most worth seeing. Since our time is short, we can visit most forests or national parks. Any waterfalls you can swim in, jump in or stand under would be preferable.

PLACES NEARBY: well, if you don't do Ilha Grande, I suggest you go to Búzios, a beachside town 2:30h away from Rio. Avoid going on weekends (if you go, try to wake up early in order to avoid traffic – it's a common weekend destination for us).

BEACHES: Ipanema is nice, but it's rather a place for peoplewatching, eating, etc. The more natural spots are a little further away, like Prainha.

OTHER: I think you should visit the São Bento Monastery and the Municipal Theater. They're both located in Centro and are my favorite historic landmarks in Rio. tripadvisor.com/Attraction_Review-g303506-d3… & tripadvisor.com/Attraction_Review-g303506-d3… (the theater offers a tour in English, só you should try it!).

NIGHTLIFE: this is a hard question! Give us more info on the type of music and ambience you like.

Last but not least, remmeber US citzens are required to have a visa in order to visit Brazil due to diplomatic reciprocity. The Brazilian consulate in Houston is accountable for providing Texas citzens with visas and there's a fee involved. There are expeditors that do everything for you and some consulates even accept applications by mail.

Try www.Rioupscale.com or www,rioexclusive.com, for larger apartments in Ipanema. Both are reputable property managers and offer great apt rentals.

Well that's put me off ever going to Rio again, and I own an apartment there! (For the benefit of U.S. readers that's British irony..)
