February 28th (Friday) until March 4th (Tuesday).

The main official parades are held on Sunday (2nd) and Monday (3rd). The winning samba schools parade again on Saturday (March 8th).

Let me get you into the details. Rio's carnival is divided into (a) the official parades held at the Sambadrome; and (b) the street block parties.

Block parties are held all over the city during the entire month and are free gatherings of people with live music and beer (not actual parades, but rather gatherings - not recommended for those avoiding crowds). Not to mention lots of young guys and girls willing to meat each other. During the carnival holiday itself (Feb 28th-March 4th 2014), there will be more block parties than before the holiday or after it. That said, celebrations will still be happening after the holiday, but in a smaller scale.

On the other hand, the Sambadrome parades form a competiton. So you have many groups, which we call samba schools, parading every evening. The top ones parade on Sunday and Monday. After that, there's a voting session and the best schools parade again on the following Saturday. In order to watch the parades, you have to purchase tickets in advance, just like a sports event. The Sambadrome is a venue built just for the purpose of hosting the official parades. Therefore, those are two different experiences - totally different, in fact.

I'm writing that much, because some visitors are not aware of the difference of both worlds, including the fact that the Sambadrome parades are not for free. Cheers

Carnaval is always celebrated seven Sundays before Easter Sunday (which in 2014 falls on April 20), although Carnaval in Rio actually begins after Rio’s mayor, Eduardo Paes, hands the key to King Momo, the Lord of Misrule and Revelry, a ceremony held on the Friday evening before the aforementioned seventh Sunday.

Thus, Rio Carnival 2014 starts on Friday, February 28th and lasts until Tuesday, March 4th—the day before Ash Wednesday, which is the first day of Lent, the period of forty weekdays devoted to fasting, abstinence, and penitence in the Western Christian calendar. (The Samba School Winners' Parade takes place on the Saturday after Carnaval, on March 8.)

Carnaval—“carne vale”—means “farewell to the flesh” because meat is commonly prohibited during Lent. The forty days represents the time Jesus spent in the wilderness, enduring the temptation of Satan and preparing to begin his ministry.

Carnaval is the largest festival event in Brasil.

Do you have to book tickets before you arrive in Rio for the main parades?

It's almost always best to do so. Here are recent threads about Carnaval:

Book hotel rooms way in advance and be prepared for higher than usual rates and minimum stay requirements. Also book flights way in advance. Many, but not all, businesses, especially offices, will be closed all week, not just through Tuesday. It's a big vacation week, so even if you travel to someplace else that week, you may encounter crowds, sold out rooms, etc.

In some cities, the blocos start immediately after New Year's Eve (in Fortaleza, every weekend; one year, the city tried to get them to start later since Canaval was later that year, but the groups protested).

"Oh the same dates as Trinidad and Tobago's Carnival!!!"

And Venice, and New Orleans, not to mention several other cities in Europe, that's the point, it's historically a symbolic last chance to self-indulge before Lent, ending on Shrove Tuesday ("Mardi Gras"). London's carnival in August is an exception to the rule simply because of the weather.
