Planning January 2, 2013 - January 9, 2013

Hello,

My wife and I are coming on our honeymoon to Rio de Janeiro from Wednesday, January 2, 2013 to Wednesday, January 9, 2013.

We would like recommendations on how we should spend our 7 days there.

Can you please give us your recommendations?

Thank you

First of all, Congratulations! Rio is the perfect place for a honeymoon.

Lagoa is the neighborhood around the lagoon Rodrigo de Freitas. It is one of Rio's nicer areas for walking or biking.

Rio’s Botanical Garden (Jardim Botânico) is a nature park containing more than 6,000 different species of tropical and subtropical plants and trees and 140 species of birds.

Think about having Brazil’s famous national dish, feijoada, a savory stew of black beans and various meats, at Casa da Feijoada, which is reputed to have the best-tasting feijoada in Ipanema. The restaurant is located right near General Osório Square (Rua Prudente de Morais 10).

Visit Santa Teresa. This is something you can easily, safely, and inexpensively do on your own via the Metro from the Zona Sul, which is also a wonderful way to meet everyday Cariocas, many of whom speak some English and seem eager to chat with visitors.

Santa Teresa, in the Lapa/Centro area, is replete with charming colonial houses, little shops, fruit and vegetable markets, galleries, and restaurants.

Get off at Carioca Metro Station, walk to a nearby bus stop for a bus that will take you to Santa Teresa in ten minutes.

After Santa Teresa you might want to visit the Metropolitan Cathedral

and the Confeitaria Colombo in nearby Centro.

Confeitaria Colombo now has a location in Copacabana, Café do Forte, located at Copacabana Fort, facing Copacabana Beach.

Yosi32,

If romance is the theme I recommend you some different restaurants that have, all of them, at least one important thing in common: "love is in the air".:.

A lunch at Quinta, in Vargem Grande neighborhood, about 45´from Copa by taxi (taxi cost: R$ 75). Enjoy the nature while tasting their amazing tasting menu between birds and monkeys in an old house with the goove surrounding you. Excellent and expensive. Book before.

Os Esquilos is a very good option for lunch too. It is right in the middle of the Tijuca National Park (so you could do it after a visit to this park) and has a very intimate atmosphere inside an old colonial house that also hosts a small antiquites museum. Realtively cheap (expect to pay R$ 100 without beverages). Don´t need booking!

Gula Gula Ipanema is my favorite casua chic one in the heart of the emblematic neighborhood. It is among the greatest options for an after-beach lunch in a warm atmosphere, though the fact it is always crowded. It doesn´t accept reservations.

If Copacabana Palace is a legend, so it is its main restaurant, the Cipriani. It is an amazing italian one with a very welcome brazilian touch. The piano performed by a local master is onipresent. Choose a chair next to the window to have a free view to the pool where most of the main prominents in the world have already bathed. Perfect for a fine romantic dining. You must book it before.

Sofitel Copacabana answer is Le Pre Catelan, considered one of the best french restaurants out of France all over the world. Prepare your wallet and enjoy every grain and drip of your wine! Book at least one week before.

Miam Miam at Botafogo has an interesting lighting and decor whose theme is the 60´s. It is runned by Roberta Ciasca, a famous chef, it is not that expensive, but is an excellent option of a place where you can have a delightful dinner in a romantic but unpretencious environment. Excellent and cheap wine list. Better to be booked.

Yume is our very best and most romantic japanese restaurant, in my opinion. Madonna also think it (she may have visited our forum someday before her first visit). Ask them to book a table for you (actually, tatami mats) above the carps aquarium, outside. Better to be experienced in a full moon or clear sky night.

Palaphita Kitch is also a must. Try to have a dinner (or at least a session of exotic amazonian drinks and appetizers) right on your first night by here. The main reason is that our huge and famous Christmas Tree located in the middle of the lagoon will be still on (lit) and it will certainly enhance your experience. If you let it for another day, you may miss it because they will be disassembling it just after NYE (may be right during this following week you will be arriving). Enjoy the views and try to book it before as well asking them to provide you a central table (not in the corners) close to lagoa´s edge.

Have a nice marriage, a wonderful stay in our city during your deserved honeymoon and be happy together!

MonteCD has already done his habitual excellent job pasting one of his pre-ready files about Rio but I could add you some spots according to your trips´ profile... again: Romance is the issue.

So, beside all Rio´s famous postcards... you can experience:

A breakfast at Parque Lage from Wednsday to Sunday (don´t arrive later than 8:45h... so you can get a seat).

A visit to Jardim Botnico (Botanical Garden), our most beautiful and idyllic park. Better in the morning (can be done after a breakfast in the neighbor Parque Lage)... better on weekdays;

A stroll by Urca boardwalk and a beer / appetizers (cod fish balls and shrimp pastels) at Bar Urca by the sunset (can be done after Sugar Loaf);

The sunset at Arpoador beach (Ipanema´s left corner);

The weekend´s cute fish market at Copacabana´s Posto 6;

A bire ride around Lagoa at early morning or late afternoon. Rent a bike at Corte do Cantagalo area, by the edge with some of the bike renters available.

The gregorian singers at Mosteiro de Sao Bentop (Mostery) on Sunday morning. Arrive earlier than 9:30am. They will bless your life.

A day (weekday) at Prainha beach (wild beach) and another at Joatinga beach.

Hang gliding from Pedra Bonita: both of you, with different instructors, of course!
