Sambadrome Parade 2013-which day is best to attend?

We will be purchasing our Sambadrome tickets as soon as possible.Which day will be best to attend or will each day be the same?Sometimes the last day of an event is best?

Will celebrations all over Rio end on Sat 16th February?

First of all, our carnival is divided into (a) the official parades held at the Sambadrome; and (b) the street block parties.

Block parties are held all over the city during the entire month (even in late January) and are free gatherings of people with live music and beer (not actual parades, but rather gatherings - not recommended for those avoiding crowds). Of course that during the carnival holiday itself (Feb 8-12, 2013), there will be more block parties than before the holiday or after it. That said, celebrations will still be happening after Feb 16th, but in a smaller scale.

On the other hand, the Sambadrome parades form a competiton. So you have many groups, which we call samba schools, parading every evening. The top ones parade on Sunday (February 10th, 2013) and Monday (February 11th, 2013). After that, there's a voting session and the best schools parade again on Saturday (February 16th, 2013). This means those three days are the best days. I frankly prefer Sunday or Monday, as there's still this competition thing in the air (and there are more schools parading, whereas on the 16th you'll see only the winners).

Thank you for your great reply. That has cleared up some confusion for me!

I have received an email from www.RIO.com saying that early bird carnival tickets are available now at a 10% discount for 2013.Do you think it is safe to book with them now?

@sarahdunne46: sorry, but I don't know much about those companies, but there are some older threads here on this forum in which they have been rated and discussed :)

Don´t worry about the day. All the Samba schools of the "Special Group" (First class or first league Samba schools) are of high quality.

So, except for those who are fan of a specific one, both days are amazing and will provide you an unforgetable experience.

sarahdunne, Copacabana will be very central for the street parties. The Sambadrome is a little bit further away, but you could reach it either by subway (Copacabana has 3 subway stations and there is one next to the Sambadrome) or by cab (which won't be that expensive...maybe R$ 25-30). I would recommend taking a cab on your way back, but on your way to the Sambadrome, subway is fine - actually, it's funny to see so many people dressing costumes in the subway.

Sunday or Monday are the best days to see the floats, costumes and competitive animation.
