Does anyone have information whether it is safe to walk from the JW Marriott Hotel to Ipanema during the day and at night?
Information? Safety in Rio depends more on your own judgement than anything else. It is not a black and white issue. In general, most of those neighborhoods of (that end of) Copacabana, Arpoador and Ipanema that you are talking about are working/middle/upper class residential neighborhoods. Even at night, if you walk on busy main streets like Av. N.S. de Coapcabana in Copacabana, you should be OK, surrounded by people. But even in so-called safer Ipanema, if you are on a side street, or near the beach, with no other people, there is potential for something to happen. Potential, not certainty, so to worry overly much serves no purpose (but to spoil your trip), but to wander around unheeding puts you at more risk, IMO. Be vigilant about your surroundings at all times. That said, we have walked back and forth from Ipanema to Copacabana day and night many times with no hint of problem.
It is safe...
Thanks for your posts. I am just wondering whether there is a map that would show which areas / streets are OK to walk through and which to avoid.
Thanks so much!

Avoid going uphill. Most of the favelas are on hills.
Avoid any deserted street, beaches, parks, etc.
Other than that, it's not so cut and dried.
You won't find a map showing safe streets and dangerous streets as safety is relative, highly dependent on whether or not a criminal and a victim happen to collide. Staying on the main streets at night is a good idea, although even the main streets can become empty and lighting is not always great. During the day, it's hard to avoid people as these are two very concentrated ares and there are thousands of people out and about.
At night, either take a bus, taxi, or walk with a group.

Hi there fear not I walked at night plenty of times on my own. Avoid dark streets, dont wear all your diamonds and look confident. I read that tip somewhere. Muggers are looking for easy targets. If you look like you know your way around and look confident they are going to look for someone else. Best of all follow your instincts. These sort of areas are pretty residential and there is a lot of nightlife so there are usually lots of people around.
have a great trip
