Sunset in Rio De Janeiro

Please advise which is the best place to watch sunset in Rio De Janeiro? Is it from the Sugar Loaf or from the Corcovado mountain or from both places in which case I can plan them on separate days? The indvidual tours seem to cover Corcovado after noon and the full day tour seems to cover Suar Loaf after noon with sunset.. Thanks!

I recommend Sugar Loaf or the rock at Arpoador in between Copa and Ipanema.

Thanks very much for the information. So we will visit Corcovado mountain in the morning by train and do the Sugar Loaf after noon by cable car so that we can watch the sunset.

You might also consider going to Itaipú beach in Niterói, just across the bay. The view from there is of Copacabana Beach. The sun sets over the hills of Rio with Corcovado, Sugarloaf and Copacabana all in view. There is a photo in this post on my blog: …blogspot.com/2010/08/niterois-ocean-beaches…

Note that during the summer months the sun will be further to the left in the frame.

In Niteroi there are many panoramic points worth checking out, among these :

Parque da Cidade (I have no idea if last april's rain caused any problem in the the road going up there though).

Same for its fortresses. There's a tour of them

Niteroi can be easily accessed by ferry from Rio's Centro neighbourhood (just ask taximan to drive you to "barcas")

Once in Niteroi right outside the ferry terminal there is a kiosk with tourist information. Within walking distance there's a bus to Niemeyer-designed MAM museum (that white spaceship perched on the cliffs)

Thanks a lot for the info! We will be staying in Copacabana (in a hotel close to Copacabana palace) . Is the sunset place close to it? and how do we get there? Is it walkable?

Both Arpoador and the fort are walkable. If you are near the Copa Palace, face the beach and walk to the right. At the end of the beach, you will pass the fort. You have to cut up side streets in Arpoador to the other side to get to the rocks. (Note: Be sure you don't walk back ON the beach after dark.)

See map (fort is about where the black number 7 is; green area is the rocks):
