There is a fireworks display on the beach on NY eve.It draws huge crowds. The nice hotels fronting the beach all have NY eve balls. They are expensive, more expensive than similar events in big city fancy hotels in the US. Be prepared to pay $300+ pp. Try to find a private party - some are organized with entry fees considerably lower. Consult your hotel concierge or travel agent. In any event, be careful when mixing in with the NY eve crowd on the street. The thieves are out in force.

Consider making dinner reservations now. Use the Ipanema.com site to locate a restaurant and book it - otherwise you may find your choices severely limited.

Consider a club in Lapa. Do a search here for my notes on that neighborhood´s clubs. Be careful about taxis. Some endeavor to work off the meter on NY eve. Check pricing before engaging.

Any advice on a restaurants for the New Year dinner? We are staying in Ipanema del Sol, want to have dinner in Ipanema and then go to Copacabana for the firework.

Your dinner options a short walk from the hotel are many, but make reservations now.Be prepared to pay a premium for a NY eve dinner in the best spots. Fot top internatioanl cuisine La Pre Catulan in the Sofitel hotel is excellent (normally $60 pp without wine).Gero also in that category. Satyricon (50),Margutta,(40) Milan Doc (35), Olivier Couzan (35), Artigiano(25) are good spots a walk from the hotel Sol Ipanema. Porcoa (25) is the buffet rodizio also nearby.

Thanks for your advice.

Should we reserve a place in Copacabana for NY festivities?

Do you know how much the taxi should cost from GIG to Ipanema del Sol Hotel?

I am not sure what you mean by making a reservation for the NY eve festivities. The fireworks display on the beach is free to all and with no reserved spaces that I know of. You will definitely need a reservation if you want to attend a hotel party. Last minute admissions might be possible, but don´t count on it. Your travel agent or your hotel concierge should be able to advise what hotel balls are available. Remember...they are very pricey.

You can walk from the Sol Ipanema to the Sofitel in 15 minutes - it´s a nice walk along the beach - so you won´t need a cab to go from your hotel to dinner. You may want to inquire at the Sofitel about special pricing for NY eve in their fancy dining room. I wouldn´t be surprised if a meal were to cost north of $100 US per person. It is a swank place.

All normal metered cabs are yellow. There are 2 meter rates. The higher rate (by 17%) kicks in after 9 pm and all day Sundays and Holidays. You can easily catch a metered cab as you exit the airport (not as you exit the customs area where you will be shouted at by hawkers of more expensive car rides). Normal daytime rate should be about $R 35- 40 from GIG to Sol Ipanema. Tipping is not customary, but you can round up to the next whole number or even give 1 or 2 exta $R if you are a real sport and the cabbie was nice. Dont be surprised if meters are not used on NY eve as pedestrian traffic will cause traffic jams.
