Though you are traveling to Rio during what would be considered winter, the daytime temperatures should run between the low 70s to the low 80s. It will certainly be warm enough for you to lay out on the beach but you may have the occasional cold front which usually brings rain along with it. I seem to remember that it gets dark early (maybe like 5:30 - 6:00pm) but that shouldn't present any problem for you.

You are only going to be there for a week so I would recommend going to see Cristo Redentor on Corcovado and Pao da Sucar (Sugarloaf Mountain). Try to get in a trip to the Imperial city of Petropolis and go across the bay to Niteroi where you can visit the beautiful Art Museum. You may want to check the Grayline Tour company for its list of Rio de Janeiro city tours. Here is their website URL:

Lots of great restaurantes in Rio. You might enjoy stopping in at the "Garota de Ipanema" restaurante. It is a little touristy but it does have a wonderful history (it's the restaurante from where Tom Jobim and Vincius de Moraes first saw Hel Pinheiro walking by who inspired them to write the famous Bossa Nova song "The Girl From Ipanema") and the food is pretty good too.

Safe travels to you!
