Travelling around South America.

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone could help me with my planning / research. My Husband and I are backpacking around South America in a few months time. We would like to go to the following places -

Rio

Iguassu Falls

Buenus Aires

Mendoza (wine region, if not too expensive)

Chile (optional)

ending in Peru for our Inca Trail trip.

I've had a look at flights and buses etc, but any information would help, as its a bit of an overload when youve never done it yourself! Also, are these routes by bus safe enough? Any tips/hints on where to go / not go.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Rebecca.

Traveling by bus to these various countries would be impractical and time-consuming. Here’s a link with a number of South American Air Pass programs that might be helpful:

You might want to consider Uruguay if you decide against Chile.

Thanks for the information. We have plenty of time, and want to do it as cheaply as possibly- would you recommend buses in this instance?

If you have plenty of time, but I would recommend that you also consider flying to some of your destinations because in certain instances flying can be cheaper than taking a bus. Have a look at air fares and compare prices.

If you have lots of time then enjoy and head down the coast of Brazil, so maybe Ilha Grande > Paraty > Sao Paulo > Florianopolis > Iguazu Falls or even have time for the Pantanal. Then cross to Argentina to Puerto Iguazu and you can either head to Salta for some great landscapes and wine (Cafayate) and then down towards BA or straight to BA on the night bus from Iguazu and then across to Mendoza and from there Santiago. Then up to coast of Chile and make your way to Peru either straight in to Peru via ARica to Tacna or I would head to San Pedro de Atacama then cross the Salt Flats to Uyuni in Bolivia then on to La Paz. Then from there, Copacabana > Puno and Cusco for the Inca Trail! Done!

Awesome! Thanks for all the information. I'll definitely look into this route and all the places along the way. Do you have any recommended companies or websites which you used? Or did you buy your tickets when you were there?

Thanks.

You could try either Bamba Experience or Green Toad Bus who offer bus routes like the one you would like to do and use all buses. http://www.bambaexperience.com/ or http://www.greentoadbus.com/en, I tried both at some point when I was travelling around!
