King Street stay worth it?

We'll be visiting overnight in a couple weeks and looking at the Hampton Inn on King St vs. the one south of Old Town, which offers a better rate, free parking and free shuttle. Would appreciate opinions of the hotels and locations. Also looking for some interesting restaurants and activitie/shops with a young teen daughter with the limited time. Thanks!

Short answer = yes.

The reason the other location offers a free shuttle is because it's not near much of anything and HAS to offer a free shuttle to take guests to Metro, restaurants, shopping, and so forth. I would definitely pay the difference to stay on King Street vs. Richmond Highway. There are dozens of great restaurants within walking distance, plus interesting shops, and you're also convenient to the King Street Metro.

The question as to whether stay right where the shops, restaurants, scenic views and reason to visit comes up in very forum. The funny part is that each questioner knows that staying right in town is so much better. If you want to spend your vacation time driving at night to Old Town from Richmond Highway and parking, then driving back, or worse waiting a half hour each way for a shuttle and never be able to drop in and out of your hotel, then stay out in Fairfax County's faux alexandria. For some it is an economic necessity, but with "limited time" and a teenage daughter, it sounds more like a bad plan

I agree with Carol757's short answer.

Yep, stay on King Street... try the restaurant Bread and Chocolate, and we also liked Jackson 20 in the Hotel Monaco.

Have fun!!
