I assume you mean in Alexandria, not in DC. Lots of restaurants along King St. heading away toward the river -- most are happy to serve a family. Some of our favorites include Hard Times (chili), South Austin Grill (tex-mex), King St. Blues, on St. Asaph St. (American), and inexpensive but excellent burgers at Five Guys, Fayette St. There is good Thai at Thai Peppers, near the metro and also at Mai Thai at the foot of King St. by the Potomac River.

Our favorite Italian is La Piazza, at the Braddock Rd. metro. Exit the metro, turn right, cross Braddock. Doesn't look like much but is family owned, excellent and friendly.

Old Town Alexandria, where you'll be, is a nice area. There are many museums, including Gadsby's Tavern, an 18th-century tavern museum, where you can also dine; the Torpedo Factory is an artist colony along the Potomac at the foot of King St. on the 3rd floor is the Alexandria Archaeology Museum with a great exhibit on historic Alexandria, there is a nice waterfront, and shopping.

Spend a minute at the Alexandria Tourist site http://www.funside.com/.
