Alexandria - Old Town overnight parking

Has anyone used the economy parking lot at Reagan National Airport as a cheap overnight parking alternative while visiting Alexandria or DC? How long does it take to shuttle from the parking lot to the terminal Metro station?

So we need more info. Are you staying in Old Town? If so, where...it makes a difference. Don't recommend using economy parking at the Airport for more than dropping or picking someone up.

Depending on your response and assuming you ACTUALLY NEED a car. If staying in Old Town and your venues are all close to Metro.....I'd advice against a car, if at all possible.

As to the shuttle between the rental returns/parking....its all either onsite, or no more than 5 minutes via shuttle away...so no worries there.

Give us more info, and we are happy to provide more detailed help.

We're driving in from PA and staying at the Hilton Old Town for 4 nights next week. Hotel parking is $25 a night. Looking for a less expensive option. We won't use the car while we're there - Metro is great. Thanks for any ideas you may have!

Four days complicates matters with an automobile and local parking. The streets are lined with parking meters that limit your stay, depending on the location, to between 2-3 hours, except after 7pm. That means, if you move your car early and park after 7pm and have a place to park while driving to the city you will still pay for parking. The city Visitor Center at the Ramsey House on the corner of Fairfax and King street will provide you a 24 hour parking pass. I read that it can be renewed once.

Info provided here:

visitalexandriava.com/about-alexandria/…

As a local, I often drive to the Crystal City or Pentagon City areas and park and take Metro (Shopping Mall (Nordstroms/Macy's) across from the Interstate and Pentagon. The rates are reduced and there is ease of getting into and out of the city quickly. But you are STILL paying parking during the day, and may well have to feed a meter upon your return.

I will say this, our Meter Maids are efficient in Alexandria. That $25 overnight may be a bargain compared to the ticket and hassle you will endure. Perhaps folks might chime in with alternative parking, but many here limit overnight parking due to the Security environment in our city. The benefit of staying in the heart of Old Town, within a block of Metro and its convenience far outweighs the trouble you will endure playing hopscotch to save a few bucks, regardless. My advice...bite the bullet and enjoy your stay with your auto safe and secure.

Hope this is helpful.

Very helpful! We had more or less concluded the same thing you suggest, for all the same reasons. Thank you for taking the time to respond and walk us through the options. You are one of the reasons Travel Forum is so great.

See how nice BByers is. Just to reassure you on your choice, if you do the math on DCA parking: Unlike daily parking where you just walk to the Metro, you take a shuttle to the Metro from the surface economy parking lot at DCA and at $12 a day is $48. So you end up spending 4 hours of your precious vacation time to save less than $50

(guestimate on driving family to hotel, looking for parking, driving yourself back to DCA, parking, waiting for shuttle to metro , buying farecards for trip to King Street., then doing it all in reverse -assuming you don't get lost, encounter trafffic or construction and find parking right in front of hotel to unload)

glad to see you decided not to complicate your visit.
