travelling to alexandria

hi...we will be heading to alexandria from ontario,canada at the end of june. we would like to know about any interesting side trips we can take on the way back home. we like hiking, history and things off the beaten path. thanks for your help

There's lots of historical attractions right in Old Town Alexandria. Here's a link listing 15 of them. visitalexandriava.com/about-alexandria/… Out of those,my favorites are the Apothecary Museum and the Torpedo Factory although the peanut soup at Gadsby's Tavern is excellent.

Assuming you have a car, a great side trip is to Mt Vernon, George Washington's estate. The Masonic Temple near the King street Metro is fun also. Most tourist's "side trips" from Alexandria are to DC to visit the monuments and museums. A couple hours longer drive south would be to Monticello, Jefferson's estate but that's not on your way back north.
