I visited Alexandria the weekend of November 11, 2005. I just can not make myself pay more than 100.00 per night at any hotel, regardless of how convenient the hotel might be. I stayed at the Holiday Inn Express in Springfield, which put me at a 15 minute or less drive from the heart of Old Town. The room was 72.99 per night, plus 6.57 taxes, for a total of 79.56 per night. The room was large and clean. The staff was friendly. The continental breakfast was excellent. I didn't use the free shuttle to the metro station, but it was constantly on the go and probably is a good way to get to the metro. Lots of shopping and restaurants within very easy walking distance. Mapquest gives directions for a turn, off of 95, that no longer exists. Just take the next turn.
