Family Friendly Hotel Close to Metro

We are looking for a hotel in the Alexandria / Arlington area that is in a safe area that is within walking distance to the metro. Typical family vaca to the nation's capital and would like a pool, clean rooms, fitness center and a REALLY decent price.

Any and all ideas are welcome! We are looking to stay between Wed. June 20 to Sun. June 24 and it seems difficult to find bookings in that window. Weekends seem easy, but weekdays are tough and pricey.

Other options are welcome as well if you have had a good experience and the price is right. Not sure how some people came up with the cheap rates they are posting on here, but the rates I'm seeing on Expedia, Orbitz, etc. seem much higher.

What's the trick to a lower rate?

Have you looked into Embassy Suites? In Alexandria there is Embassy Suites-Alexandria-Old Town which is opposite the King Street Metro station. In Arlington there is Embassy Suites Hotel Crystal City about 2 and a half blocks from the Crystal City Metro station. Embassy Suites gives a free full breakfast to its guests.

Our family stayed at the Embassy Suites in Alexandria last summer. It was fantastic! The Metro station was right across the street. We flew into National and took the Metro to the hotel with no problem, and we had 5 rather large suitcases. The breakfast was really good and was included in the price of the hotel. You could get a made-to-order omelet, pancakes or waffles, cereal, fruit, yogurt, etc. We never left hungry in the morning. The pool was fine while we were there. We were fortunate that we were tucked into a rear corner of the hotel. The fountain in the courtyard blocked out all other noise. Our room looked directly out on the roof of the adjacent building, but hey, it was very quiet. The hotel offered a shuttle to Old Town Alexandria, which we used a few times. The bus stopped on the corner and was free if you had a transfer from the Metro. We were there for a week and got the cheap 7 day Metro pass. In all, we were very pleased with this hotel and would definitely stay there and recommend it to our friends.

One trick to finding a lower rate is to go directly to your hotel's website. Sometimes you can find the lowest rates there, especially if you belong to AAA. Not always, but sometimes.

Have a great vacation. You're going to love the area.
