There are dozens - do you have a cuisine, price range, location, preference? - same for Dallas

What Octoboy said. Also, are you thinking old school icons, or new icons? Old ones may not have the best food, sadly.

luxurytraveler2012 answered on Dallas forum old school, no chains.

I'm thinking Salt Lick in Driftwood; Chuy's on Barton Springs Road; Magnolia Cafe

There are too many "best places", will you be here a month?

if you want old Austin: Matt's El Rancho, Threadgills, Kerby Lane, Sandy's Hamburgers, Top Notch Hamburgers, Amy's Ice Cream, Fonda San Miguel, Quality Seafood, Green Pastures (Jeffrey's doesn't really go here since it's been re-born and is not the original).

Newer, but could be considered iconic: Oasis (mainly for drinks and the view, no-one goes for the food), Chuy's, Shady Grove, Guerros, WHip In, Eastside Cafe

Recent, but Austin-centric: Uchi (and Uchiko), Torchy's, Barley Swine, Foreign and Domestic, Franklins, La Barbeque, Gourdough's Public House, Sway, laV.. this list could go on and on...
