Birthday dinner recommendation for a group of ladies

I'll be in Austin for work and a bunch of my friends are flying in for the weekend to celebrate my birthday (all early 30s). We are looking for a restaurant for dinner with a group that has great food (several of us are foodies and love unique food), cocktails, and a fun social atmosphere.

I needs to be in or close to downtown since we won't have a car and accept reservations for groups of 6 or so (this will be during SXSW).

Would really appreciate any recommendations.

Do you know which hotel you are booking? I ask, because there are lots of great restaurants downtown thatwe can list for you and perhaps we can keep you close to your hotel at night. Tks

I'm staying at the Hilton, but I don't want to plan around the hotel. We will be going out afterwards anyway. Walking is not a problem and we can take a cab if need be.

What are your thoughts on Second Bar + Kitchen?

Second is a great idea. SXSW week is so crazy, I understand wanting to get reservations. There's Wink, but you might need a cab -- it would be a short cab ride, but a bit far to walk.

No, Smartcooki, I didn't want to plan close to the Hilton. I just wanted to get a better idea of your location. BTW, that is perfect for SXSW. Here are a few lists you can look into:

Also, we have a local weekly entertainment newspaper "bible" that you can view online every week:

Go over to the left where there is a box showing cover page and click on E-Edition. Lots of restaurant info too.

I like Second Bar and Kitchen. Food is fresh, creative and I love the outside deck on the second floor. I haven't been to Parkside yet but I've heard good reviews. Since you're from NY maybe you'd like something unique to Austin? Moonshine is hard to beat. Sushi at Uchi and Uchiko is good. Paul Qui's restaurant Qui is getting good reviews. I think they take a few reservations and then take walk ins.

Definitely not gourmet but a fun place with good Tex Mex with a twist is Hula Hut on Lake Austin.

Please let us know where you wind up and give us feedback?

Welcome to Austin!

Thanks so much. These are great. We will probably try some of the others the other nights as well.

My chef friend here recommended Qui as well so I've been in touch with them over email. They're not booking for SxSW yet, but hoping they can fit us in one night.

I've been to SX before but it's been 5 years. Excited to try the new hot spots.

Thanks everyone. I will report back.

Thank you. Unfortunately, not my favorite type of food and trying to stay in downtown...
