austin vs Nashville

We are visiting States in July( from NZ) and wonder whether Austin is as good as Nashville for bars with live music. We like country rock and roll and other pop music frm 70s 80s

The two cities are so different and in such different parts of the country it's really difficult to compare them. The only commonality is music, but even then the scenes are very different.

It's been a while since I've been to Nashville, but I have friends who have lived there off and on for years and worked in the music industry and it has always come across as a very industry focused town. You'll find acts who are looking to get signed, but you'll generally hear and see mainstream country music. The Austin scene is changing, but I think it's still largely dominated by local bands and small touring acts that may not be signed to any label, or that may be releasing music independently or through a small label. South by Southwest brings the industry people to town in March, but for the rest of the year, it's a very local scene. You won't hear a lot of mainstream country music though.

I think where you visit may depend on where else you plan to visit during your time in the US. Austin is a great starting point for visiting the rest of Texas and even the rest of the Southwest.

Texas has its own 'country' music/song writing music scene compared to the mainstream, mass produced, pop country from Nashville. As far as music, I'd pick Texas/Austin. It has been a while since I was in Nashville ..I just remember more smoking at the time. As well, the whole Music Row was a big over-commercialized area. Either one you chose, you will get a version of Americana. In my biased opinion, Texas/Austin area will definitely give you a much wider range of food, music, culture

I'd also chose Austin because it is only 1.5 hours to San Antonio which is a different culture, music etc...Mexican-food, music, and culture. Around Austin are honky tonks that are institutions in Texas-(Broken Spoke) As well, due to Texas' proximity to Louisiana you can also find Cajun/Louisiana food, music

Here are a couple of videos to peek your interest.
