Things to Do In Austin in Early October

My wife & I & our 9 year old daughter may be coming to the Leander/Austin area in October to visit for about 4 days.

We will be driving if we come so we'll have a car to get around.

Looking for recommendations of things that are a must do or a must see if in the area and things that would likely interest a 9 year old girl.

I've seen that a kayak tour near downtown Austin where you ultimately arrive at bats that hang out under a bridge seems to be popular.

I've also read where downtown Austin is popular, too.

We would probably take a day trip or two to San Antonio while there and we generally know what there is to do/see in San Antonio, so we are good there.

We have been to/through Austin before but really only stopped there for a few hours to visit with family, so we don't have much first hand knowledge about the city otherwise.

Also, recommendations of specific areas of town that are popular areas to stay in hotel-wise?

Many thanks in advance for any recommendations / suggestions.

When in early October is your visit? The first 2 weekends are back-to-back ACL Festival which makes doing anything close to Lady Bird Lake and Zilker Park next to impossible. If you don't already have a hotel, you may have difficulty finding one. Have you started looking?.

We'd be there during the very first weekend in October.

What is the ACL Festival?

Haven't started looking for hotels yet. Still not 100% sure we are taking the trip yet. Just trying to begin some planning in advance though in case we do go.

Okay, I looked up the ACL Festival and I see it's a big music festival. Gonna be busy there those two weekends it would appear due to the music festival.

Since you are probably coming as a family, I recommend checking out vacation rentals on Trip Advisor in Austin. Lot more comfortable for you - daughter would possibly have a yard/etc. to play in. Also more space than hotel. Ditto on the caution about the ACL - plan trip for OTHER dates in October.

City of Austin licenses properties for short term rentals - try to pick one with a license.

Hello, my colleagues and I will also be in Austin Oct. 19-23! We are really looking forward to the trip. We are exhibitors at a fair but we will have some time off. Any suggestions about where we can enjoy some good music?

Thank you so much! I will check it for sure.

Since you are DE for San Antonio.... would you recommend a trip to San Antonio? I've seen that it is pretty close to Austin.

If you'll have a car and a full day of extra time, you should try to go to San Antonio. I wouldn't try to get there without a car because it will take too much time and there's plenty to explore here in Austin. From downtown Austin to downtown San Antonio (to the Alamo or the Mercado area), will take about 1 1/2 hours each way (with light to moderate traffic) -- so that is a 3+ hour time commitment without even seeing anything.

If you read through some of the posts on the Austin forum, you'll see there's a few areas to explore in downtown Austin with music, food, drink and some shopping. 6th St (between I35 and Congress) has the largest concentration of bars, Red River (between 6th and 11th) has quite a few music clubs, warehouse district (2nd - 5th St, west of Congress) has a mix of clubs, restaurants and shopping as does South Congress (south of Lady Bird Lake).

I agree on the recommendation to see San Antonio if you have time. We've been there several times. Great city and lots of things to see/do (i.e. Riverwalk, The Alamo, other stuff I'm just not remembering right now). I'd plan for a min. of 2 days in San Antonio if you can swing it, but 1 day would be fine if that's all you had available.
