Austin Business Trip Next Week

Hi, I will be at the Doubletree Suites (I think it is near the Capitol) next week. I will be attending a class at the hotel every day, Monday through Friday, and wondered what to do after class gets out at 4 or 5 each day. Is it close enough to walk to Sixth Street? Any good Healthy restaurants anywhere near? Thanks for any suggestions you may have to help with my evenings!

A walk to 6th street might be challenging as you will be on 15th street. You'll be surrounded by parking lots, government offices and law offices. There's a couple of restaurants west down 15th.

To get to 6th street, your best bet would be to take a cab.

Here's a map of the entire downtown area. The bus routes are outdated (especially the Dillo no longer runs) and some of the hotels shown under construction have been completed. Its from the city website...

Here's a map of 6th street.

From my experience, many restaurants will offer healthy choices.

Feel free to ask questions!

9 blocks really isn't that far. It's downhill to 6th street. :) If you're out late you might want to take a cab, it would be inexpensive.

Thanks so much Wally and Octoboy. I really appreciate the map. I do like to walk for exercise, so as long as it is safe I am good with that. I was hoping for a bit more of a central location, but staying where the training is taking place takes precedence....

Look at a google map (or use yelp) and you'll see there's a few good Austin places close to the hotel -- between 15th street walking towards campus (using Guadalupe or San Antonio). The Texas Chili Parlor, Clay Pit, Dog & Duck Pub, Sagra, Texidelphia or Thundercloud subs (for lunch), Div Bar and Lounge, Arturo's.

You will be a short walk from one of my new favorite places to eat - Levaca Teppan, about 1 1/2 blocks north on Lavaca. Another block or so north and you are at the south end of campus, there is a place at Guadalupe and MLK - Veggie Heaven if you like good vegetarian food. You could continue up Guadalupe if you want to walk on the Drag and see some of UT. Blanton museum and the Ransom Center currently has a copy of the Guttenburg Bible if you'd like to check it out. The Blanton Museum also has a nice cafe and is across the street from the Bob Bullock Museum, which has a great Imax theatre in it. All an easy walk from the Doubletree going north.

When you get out of meeting at 4 or 5 it won't be dark until 8pm and walk is fine. I used to work 4 blocks North of DTree and walked it all the time. Just take cab back, don't walk it in the dark.

There are two other districts downtown besides the 6th St. Bars:

http://www.6street.com/6s_pg_warehouse.htm Cool map at this URL of area venues

http://www.cantinalaredo.com/ is in Warehouse area

Then there is 2nd Street.

http://www.2ndstreetdistrict.com/ This is URL for map and list of 2nd St. sites. It is my favorite Dtown area. Tree lined on both sides and lots of outdoor eating.

http://leafsalad.com/ has a small order at the counter very healthy menu

http://malagatapasbar.com/ Great atmosp. & food and entertainment (?)

http://lacondesaaustin.com/ Very, very popular Austin spot

Lastly, you said healthy. You have got to try and get in a trip to Whole Foods. Yeah, you might have been to some other W.F in your travels, but this one is Disney World for food. Tons of salad bar items, kiosks for soups, Italian, oriental, gellato, pastries, chocolate fountain, snacks to take to Dtree etc. But my favorite is the BBQ bar where you can sit and eat at the counter and my favorite is the melt in your mouth brisket so tender you don’t need a knife. Or you can get your food and take the elevator or walk up to the roof to sit down and eat outside.

http://wholefoodsmarket.com/stores/lamar/ It is at the corner of 6th and Lamar. Long walk, but there are city busses that go there from near corner of Congress and 6th. Just ask the bus driver when you get off where to catch it back because 6th and 7th are one way streets. Cost is $1 each way or if you just want to ride and look, you can get a day pass for $2 on any city bus. Just stuff $2 in the slot and driver will give you a ticket. There is also an Austin Capitol Metro office on Congress Ave and they are very helpful. It’s at 323 Congress. www.capmetro.org/riding/schedulesandmaps.asp
