Getting around in Austin

We will be in Austin for a long weekend (Thurs-Sun) Our lodging is on 4th and Congress. Will we need to rent a car to get around or will taxis/busses be okay? Since our stay will be short, we'll probably not be going out of town.

Thanks.

There's plenty of eating/drinking/music within walking distance of your hotel (4-6 blocks). The busses are good, especially downtown. Taxis will be available, but if you travel much distance from downtown you'll probably have to call for a cab to get back.

Here's a good, clickable map, although its a bit dated:

For a long weekend, you really don't need a car if you don't plan to leave the downtown/South Congress area. Taxis are relatively inexpensive and downtown is easily walkable.

If you are staying in the downtown area, there is really no need to rent a car to visit the sights in the area. Congress Avenue from the lake to the Capitol isn't very long (11 short blocks) and there are many busses going up and down the Avenue. Get a day pass if you need to so you can hop on and off if walking any distance is a problem for you or if it is too hot. Fares are cheap ($1 for a 1 way and $2 for a round trip / day pass). They take dollar bills so you don't have to carry or pay with coins. Times and routes are well posted at each bus stop and bus drivers are very helpful. You can make use of the Captial Metro's trip planner (www.capmetro.org) to check out which bus to take if you are headed to points outside of the downtown area. You can view / download / print the downtown system map here -> capmetro.org/riding/…SystemMap_Downtown.pdf
