Weekend Getaway

My girlfriends and I are thinking about planning a trip to Austin for a long weekend. We are in our early 30s. Can anyone recommend a good hotel, bars, restaurants. And, what area of Austin should we stay in? Thanks for your help.

Hotel San Jose on South Congress - great hotel w/ cool bar and coffee shop.

South Congress is the ultimate hang out street.

Definitely stay in the downtown or South Congress areas to really experience the flavor of Austin. The San Jose Hotel is supposed to be very nice but may be more expensive than you had in mind. If so, the downtown hotels are the Radisson, the Driskell, the Omni, the Stephen F. Austin Intercontinental. Also consider the Hyatt and the Embassy Suites on Barton Springs Rd.

S. Congress is reliably funky, but if you're flying halfway across the country, you'll want pampering. Stay downtown at the Four Seasons. It's very nice but not stuffy. The rooms may be a bit more expensive, but you won't need a car, you'll be on Town Lake, and the staff will certainly take care of you as far as restauraunts, clubs, spas, etc... You might also check the Driskill, but I doubt many places are nicer than the Austin Four Seasons.

We always stay at the Austin Motel - it is not for everyone - it's kind of tacky and kitschy, but the price and neighborhood are right on target.

The Hilton or Hampton Inn downtown are both new. The Staphen F. Austin and the Driscoll are 'historic' hotels. The Hyatt and the Embassy Suites are in less congested areas of downtown.

A group of 30 something girls? Recommend the Embassy Suites.

Breakfast at Las Manitas on Congress just a short walk across the bridge from the E/S.

Jovita's on thursday nights. South First street. Early 8-10pm.

Get's you primed for 6th.

Set aside one night just for the Continental Club.

The Old Alligator Grill on S. Lamar. Good cajun food and usually a pretty good band.

The Bitter End in the Warehouse District on Colorado. Z-Tejas on West 6th.

Hutt's Hamburgers on W. 6th and the Hauffbrau.

Jeffery's on W. Lynn.

Enjoy!
