4th of July 2011 in Allentown

Just wondering if someone can tell me what is happening in Allentown on the 4th of July. My daughter (10) and I are going to be over from Australia and this will be our first 4th of July.

We are looking at staying near Dorney Park but are not planning on going there on the 4th as I would assume that would be a really busy day...

So what's happening around that area and what things are really worth doing? We only have limited days in the area. We are planning on doing Dorney Park just before the 4th..

Thanks for your help in advance..

I don't know about Allentown's plans but you could check out the visitors website. http://www.discoverlehighvalley.com/

But an even better idea would be to visit Philadelphia. It will be crowded and you would need to make plans.

You're correct that Dorney Park will be busy on the 4th. But because the 4th of July is on a Monday this year, be prepared for the park to also be quite busy Saturday and Sunday, as it gets crowded on weekends and holidays. They are open an hour later than usual on the 3rd and 4th, and they usually do their own fireworks show for the holiday.

The City of Allentown has its fireworks on the 4th. I haven't seen the details yet this year, but they go off from J. Birney Crum Stadium, which is less than five minutes from Dorney Park. If you go inside the stadium, they usually have additional events like sky divers, canons, and bands. You can also watch from Cedar Beach Park just outside the stadium.

The City of Bethlehem has its fireworks on the 4th as well. It's about a 20 minute drive from Dorney Park. They usually have a band concert, followed by fireworks at 9 pm that can be seen from lots of places near the downtown area.

If you're interested in baseball and fireworks, Allentown's minor league team is called the Lehigh Valley Ironpigs. They are the AAA affiliate of the Philadelphia Phillies. On Sunday July 3, they are playing a home game at 6:35 pm and there will be "3-D Fireworks" after it, where they give you special glasses that make the fireworks look cooler. It's a very nice and new stadium, about 15 minutes away from Dorney Park. The team's website is http://www.ironpigsbaseball.com and if you want to go, you should probably order tickets in advance because the fireworks games are popular.

4th of July in Philadelphia is a huge occasion because it's where the Declaration of Independence was signed. neslaw is correct, it will be very crowded, but there are loads of special events in the city that day. But if you're worried about the Dorney Park crowds, you may not want to venture into Philly that day. It's about an hour and 20 minutes from Dorney.

Hope this helps!

Thanks so much IceGurlie

Yes, that has helped heaps.. We weren't planning on going to Dorney Park that weekend but thought it maybe the easiest place to work from due to us staying in this hotel previously.

We also fly out of Allentown on the 5th so looking for something not far away.

Thanks again...

You're quite welcome! The Dorney Park area is a pretty central location from which to explore the Lehigh Valley. From there, you won't have far to drive at all to find something fun to do for the 4th of July!

The city's municipal fireworks display is at J. Birney Crum Stadium and they can also be seen from Cedar Beach Park nearby. If you type in the stadium name on Google maps, it comes up right away...between Turner and Linden, and between 20th and 22nd streets.

Dorney Park and the Iron Pigs Baseball Stadium will also have fireworks on the 4th.
