Visiting with possible intention to move to Ashland

I will coming to Ashland within the next month or so to see about possibly moving there.

I have been researching the internet to find out more about housing (I would start out renting) and what sections might be best for me to focus on. I am 53 and would prefer and 2-3 bedroom house.

There are a number of hotels and B & B's that I found on the internet to stay at when I visit, and they all seemed fairly close to the center of town. Any recommendations are appreciated. I do not want to spend much on accomodations, as I want to conserve my money for the move.

What is the best source for house hunting?

Thanks!

Rhonda

Too bad about Quinz, we have had a couple of OK meals at Alex's. There is a nice outdoor (small) patio out in the back that overlooks the creek where we enjoyed sitting. :)

As a realtor, but not from that area, I will tell you most chambers of commerce have relocation packages they can send you free or at very low cost, i.e. postage. All the relo packets I've seen have a bunch of good info in them on utility providers, maps, area descriptions, schools, medical providers, types of businesses. Also a great way to get to know an area is subscribe to the local newspaper. I think in Ashland it is the Daily Slipup, just kidding. The newspaper idea is a great way to go though.

Medford is a nearby larger town with less expensive housing.

We have been living in Ashland for the last couple of years, but in 14 years of visits here, we stayed at the Columbia Hotel on Main Street. It's above the street-level businesses on Main between 1st and 2nd streets. It's a small "European-style" hotel, meaning that rooms typically have a sink, but that shared toilets and showers are down the hall. It's nothing fancy, but it's clean and pretty inexpensive, and it's centrally located.

As for house hunting, there are quite a few realtors in the downtown area to choose from. We ended up going to Sylvia at Gateway, located on the plaza. At the time, we were visiting for the week, so we told her the kinds of places we were looking for, price range, etc. She arranged to meet us in the mornings to show us a number of places that we might be interested in and to educate us on what various parts of Ashland are like.

As a previous poster mentioned, Ashland is considered a prime place to live here in the Rogue Valley, so prices tend to be higher than in other areas. If it's not important that you live -in- Ashland, you could extend your search to Talent and Phoenix. Talent is probably less than 10 minutes away if you're driving; Phoenix 15 minutes.
