Teenagers at Atlantic Beach, NC

Staying at AB in August with teenagers. How crowded is the beach? How active are the volleyball nets during the week? What activities can we take them to since the boardwalk is small and seems like it doesn’t have anything to do. Are there outlets shops nearby? Thank you for any info.

Plenty to do in the area if not in AB itself. There is a new skateboard park across from Atlantic Station maybe 1/2 mile or so south of the boardwalk. In Pine Knoll Shores (15 min drive south) the NC Aquarium is worth a visit as is Fort Macon Park (15 min drive north of boardwalk) to the north. Currents can be strong at Fort Macon as it is near/on the Beaufort inlet. There is an arcade and bowling place in Cape Carteret for rainy days maybe 45 min drive. Historic Beaufort is a nice place to visit, there is and old graveyard and the NC Maritime Museum where the artifacts of Blackbeard's ship are displayed. You can also catch various ferries to Shackleford Banks where their are wild horses roaming and good shelling. Beaufort is 30 mins or so from AB. There are ferries there to Cape Lookout as well or if the water is choppy you can also take a drive to Harkers Island (approx 50 min from AB) and visit the US Park Service complex and Decoy Museum there. Ferries go from there to Cape Lookout and Shackleford and is a much shorter boat ride if windy/choppy. The beach in AB is nice and shouldn't be overly crowded, especially during the week. Hope this helps, Ben

The Shark Shack is a fun outdoor dining space. Right next door, the AB Surf Shop is a really nice clothing store popular with teens

We were there three years ago with teens (going again next week) and had fun taking them to Beaufort, just across the bridge. Decent shopping, ice cream, and everyone liked the Maritime Museum. We also did the ferry tour to Shackleford Banks where the wild ponies are.
