I recommend Makati for first time visitors to the Philippines. Makati is very central in location -- close to shopping, dining, nightlife and other conveniences. Depending on your budget, there are many hotels to choose from.

I agree with Vanilla Bean. Stay in Makati. Its more convenient and pleasant to stay in Makati. Staying in Manila/Ermita area could be a bit chaotic...Its kind of dated also, and have seen better days.. I don't mean to be negative about the Manila area, its just that I've met a couple of tourists who did not enjoy the city at all becuase their entire experience was concentrated on that area...

Second everything said about Makati.

You might also want to take a look at Ortigas Area.

Most tourists stay either in Makati or Ortigas area. Makati is the foremost financial and business district of the Philippines so most business establishments have their office there. Ortigas is next in line for being the financial district and is also quite busy. An additional factor though is that the Ortigas area is where most shopping areas in the city are concentrated. All the big malls are located side by side and a short distance from each other - Megamall, Robinson's Galleria, Podium, Shangrila and the Greenhills Shopping Center is just a few minutes away. Plus factor for Makati is that it's nearer the airport. Distance from Makati to Ortigas is about 8 kilometers and about 15-30 minutes at normal traffic

Try Saint Illian's Inn -- around 5-10 minutes away by car from the Ayala Center. Their cheapest rooms start at around US$27. (www.saintilliansinn.com)

If it is a bunch of guys then stay in the Ermita area. In that area you will find bars, restaurants and hotels in different price ranges.

There is a big Robinson Mall available. Short walk to MRTl, casinos and travel agencies for tours.

So, if you need a recommendation for hotels how much do you wan to spend per night?

Good luck.
