Yes, it is possible to do in stages by coach/vans, budget airlines(Air Asia/Fireflyz) or full services airlines(MAS, Thai).

By flight, train, coaches, vans.

Following is applicable if you start from Penang. 1)Thailand-bound coaches/vans to Haadyai, Bangkok etc are available in Sg Nibong Bus Terminal( 10 mins taxi ride from the airport)

2)Train start from Butterworth, a 20 mins ferry ride from Penang island. The train station is walking distance from the Butterworth ferry terminal.

Hi JeannieB

At puduraya ,there are rugular bus to Hatyaai

Regular night bus(very comfortable) depart around 9-10pm from Puduraya to Hatyaai(Thailand) and continue to other preferreddestination

Buy ticket inside the bus terminal from the authorised ticketing counters.

Do not buy ticket from tout(with walkie talkie) operating outside and inside the bus terminal

Ask for super VIP coach

Cheers

Hi

Pudu raya is the main bus terminal at Kuala Lumpur.

Many bus companies operate this popular route>>KL(Pudu Raya) to Hatyaai,Thailand.

By Kalana Jaya LRT,board at KL sentral to Plaza

Rakyat(This is pudu Raya bus terminal)

Hi JeannieB,

I have travelled from Malaysia to Thailand via bus, train & plane and would consider the bus the worst way to go. My favourite is the train but if time is really short then obviously a flight. The bus is a rough but cheap way to travel. I would always choose a train over a bus anyday as you have more space and can get up & move around, have a great view from the window rather than just looking at a road, and can stop off wherever you like. Also, if it's an overnighter you can get a cheap 'sleeper' so you get a bed AND save on a night's accomodation too. Train fares from Malaysia are very cheap. My last trip was a delux sleeper cabin to myself with bed, bathroom, tv (and supper) to Singapore for something like $35 per person. I paid double to have the cabin to myself as I was on my own. Safe & happy travels.

Thailand is HUGE. Where do you plan to go in Thailand?

That should be the first question you need to answer before you decide on the mode of transport to get there.

Where? Phuket? Bangkok? Chaing Mai? Pattaya? Udon Thani?

Cheack out seat61 website which details how you can reach BKK by train, with stop over at the River Kwai.

Worth trying it out.
