skiing conditions in late December-early January

Our family is travelling to Tokyo in late December-early January. We want to spend most of our two weeks in Tokyo, but thought we might take a side trip to ski. Sapporo seems too far, Nagano seems closer. Are conditions in Nagano good at that time of year?

In an average year conditions will be good.

Both Nagano & Niigata offer plenty of choice, reasonably easily accessed from Tokyo.

Happo for groomed piste skiing.

Myoko Kogen for on & offpiste skiing.

Nozawa for its nice onsen village with some inbounds offpiste (trees).

The deep, dry Hokkaido powder could wait until a future trip.

Late December should be fine in all likelihood. Before mid-December, ski resorts anywhere within a couple hours of Tokyo sometimes don't get enough snow but the period when you are coming should be good.
