JR Train from Kyotot to Hiroshima

What would be the best way to do this? We are being told we have to travel back to Tokyo unless we buy an "N" train ticket. We will be using JR rail passes.

If the "N" train is the best way to do this in less than 6 hours ...any idea of the difference in price?

Very strange advice. With the rail pass you cannot use the Nozomi trains but must use the Hikari, which is slightly slower and does not run so often. I am no expert but it seems you always need to change at Shin Osaka. For example, the 9.49 from Kyoto arrives at Shin-Osaka at 10.05. You can them get the 10.19 which arrives in Hiroshima at 11.53.

You cannot use the Nozomi trains with the rail pass, even if you pay extra. This is a problem only if you are in a great hurry!

Very strange, indeed. It only takes 2 hours from Kyoto to Hiroshima on the shinkansen.

There are 3 Hikari trains per day that take you directly from Kyoto to Hiroshima (without a transfer at Shin-Osaka):

Hikari 391 which departs Kyoto at 7:49, Hikari 393 at 8:02 and Hikari 395 at 8:22.

Even if you don't catch the above trains, transferring at Shin-Osaka is not a big deal, most of the time all you have to do is cross the platform. As strange as it may sound, catching a non-through shinkansen and transferring to the next takes less time to get to Hiroshima. For example, Hikari 395 takes 2 hours and 3 minutes but taking Kodama 597 at 9:39 and transferring to Hikari Railstar 455 takes 1 hour and 49 minutes including 6 minutes transferring time.
